Poor man looking for a Subaru

Hello all,
Okay I'm very poor, but I'm managed to scrape together £7/£8K for a new car.
I would love to get a Subaru Impreza 2000 Turbo. Am I being unrealistic can cars be found in this price range. If so does anyone
know a good place to look. I've checked the official dealers and the cars seem a bit expensive.

You can now pick up 93 and 94 year cars for £7-8k. Check how much you'll be charged for insurance and servicing. Subarus are getting much cheaper to buy, but they still cost a lot to run. 20mpg, 2 services and a new set of tyres every year is hard on the wallet - and if you need a new turbo or clutch......

Looking in the local free paper yesterday I saw an M reg Metallic Green UK Impreza Turbo with Full Service History and Air Con for £7999.
I agree with Orville about the running costs! Typical fuel consumption is 20MPG (25-28 with motorway driving) 2 services a year (£100 for a minor service), a set of tyres will cost you around £500. I am 27 and insurance for me costs £830 a year.

have you considered and import? I know, I know, they cost a bit more to insure, and main dealers won't touch them, but they are cheaper than UK spec, and they usually have higher equipment levels as well, eg; standard Air con and climate control, plus electric folding mirrors (very handy )
My 1994 WRX Wagon (5 door) cost me aprox 10 grand in april last year, and prices have dropped, so 7-8k should get around a 1994/95 WRX, maybe even an STi 2 or 3.
As for MPG, yup, scooby does tend to drink a bit, but that's life. As mentioned above, if you have an import you HAVE to take it to an independant specialist to get it serviced, but this can be a blessing as they can be cheaper than main dealers.
I'm not claiming to be that knowledgeable but I too was/am a poor man running a scooby (hence the import) and if the import thing sounds interesting then feel free to email me about why I got an import and what I reckon. See my profile for my email address.

I've got a 97P with 90K miles FSSH
97 is new stlye front and interior, it's also got the 16" alloys.
Colour is Reddish blue and it's a mere 8495 pounds.
Oh yeah Full straight through exhaust with Scoobysport back box and K&N panel filter.

My WRX Wagon is coming up to 70k, it was 65k when I got it. As it's an import I have no idea if it was totally thrashed in japan, and this is one of the concerns about importing. If you go through a decent importer then you may be able to find out a bit of history about the previous owner.
As for milage, well, I'm pretty sure there are a few peeps on this here bbs with high mileage cars, and hopefully they'll come and talk on this thread, if not then one could always start another thread about high milage cars (I'm gonna get killed for this )

Thanks all for the feedback. Wow I didn't think I'd be able to get a ~94 WRX for 7-8K.
I'm really confused now. I didn't really concider the running cost of a scooby. The low MPG, four tire changes, 2 services/year +
high insurance for an import, I guess it all adds up. Also I'm just a bit worried that a high milage Subaru may have been driven
hard. I mean it is a fast machine and is meant to be driven fast. I guess I'm saying most people buy Subaru's to go fast.
I also guess that leads to the question, what would be considered as high milage for a scooby. I know they are meant to be
reliable, but 100K on a BMW 7 series is nothing, but on a Metro its at the end of its life.
If I don't get a scooby I'll end up getting a BMW 318IS. I know its no comparison, but the running costs are less.
