De-spoilering

De-spoilering
I'm toying with the idea of removing the rear spolier from my Crystal Grey Sti......as seems to be so popular in the states.
I think a few on here have done it.....if you are one of them, how much work was involved in getting the holes blanked off? Major bodywork job or what?
I'm kinda tempted to get some "sticky blanks" to check the look and then make my decision after running the car that way for a while.....giving me opportunity to view the car as I see it in the street, etc and also to get reactions of other folks.
Wonder if I should go the whole US style and fit some "Carlos Fandango" wheels? They are getting 10" wide rims on their cars over there by introducing extra camber, etc to the suspension. Some of them look superb (Advan RS with the GTR face for example), but are they cocking up the handling completely by messing with the camber so much??

Don't do it! ~ the de-spoilered look looks pants IMO
Saying that really high [GT-Wing] type spoilers look cr4p as well ~ unless of course it's on a proper GT car..
Mid sized spoilers are where it's at IMO

5 holes in total to weld and fill.
Not an easy job to get right! took me around 6hours and im decent with a welder.
Can obviously just blank them off and fill, but it might sag in the long term.

Try and buy a boot with no holes from an RA. Not that many about but they can be found.

Do it...... i have!!
Even if it is a newage, which i very much doubt with the colour you've stated......
ps, holes were easy to weld, if done correctly..... any bodyshop should be able to sort it out!!

I was thinking the same thing, because its hard to see if their is a cop car following in the distance. A carbon fibre boot lid would look nice but if I am cornering at 120mph the rear wing really helps, look at some diagrams what the STi newage wing does. I guess I am saying is that if you don't drive that fast then get rid of the wing.

The "sticky blanks" might be a good idea to let you decide if you like it. You could also pick up a scrap bootlid and get it filled/sprayed. Whichever way you decide to go I'm sure you could sell the lid you don't need.

Well I was messing about with the car today (fitting JDM mirrors.......another thread to follow in tech section), so I took ten minutes and whipped the spoiler off.
Pics only taken with phone, so not the best......I think I'll go for a drive about and see how it looks in the mirror.
And did somebody say there were 5 holes???

<------------- view my scoob
Cost me £200 to fit and paint the lip spoiler, that included filling the holes in the boot and painting it.
I was worried about handling when it was gone, but it hasn't made a difference at all.
It's running on standard STi wheels at the moment but that will be changing in the next few months... still, I think it looks better wingless.

Go wingless fella....
I fancy doing mine too, will shave at least 20 minutes off my waxing time!
If I did go wingless, I would go for the Seibon carbon bootlid, so no need to weld/fill etc.
Good luck!

If this is an accurate description of the level of DF then I'd be reluctant to remove the wing..!

Saying that, surely Subaru wouldn't have made the spec d and ra-r's that way if there was a problem..?

Dont do it mate, the Americans!!! What do they know about cars really??? A scooby is what it is,a rally car and it should be treated that way.Big,chunky, noisey and in your face!!! My opinion only Taking the wing of it makes it look like your a geography teacher on your way to a fild trip.
