What would you buy for £10,000
#1
You have a £10,000 windfall, which you would like to spend on a 'fun' car. Track use essential, road use is secondary
You already have a Scooby, so another one isn't an option
What would you buy with the money?
P.S. Does anyone have any comments on the Caterham 2000 Academy cars.

With regards the GTi-R did you never feel like you were in a second best car though?
I was considering one of these but they dont quite have the image of a Scoob or Evo?
Also what was fuel econ like on them?????

I would also say E30 M3 then spend the change on bits for track action.
Or is turbo power then also a GTi-R, great value for money and well tunable.
Cheers

Dream, I agree that they are not as well known as a scoob or evo but no this, every time i was out in it on a hot sunny day ( understeer city ) i would prey of seeing a scoob or evo or anything due to the fact about the unknown capability of them.
They have a very strong engine and 0-60 in 4.8 from only 285bhp is unbeatable value for money. As to be expected the fuel side of things is dependent on your right foot, 15-25mpg, so not that bad.
If you get one in your mirror dreamweaver you will then know.
jay.

If you want a car for track use, get a 7 type thing, not necessarily a Caterham, you could pickup a nice Westfield or Vx engined Caterham with that much and you will be far faster than any subaru - also because its so light you will get through tyres and pads at a far slower rate.
I've got both :-)))))

Westfield / Dax / Locost with the most powerful engine you can find (preferably a V8)
Cobra replica with an even bigger Chevy V8
Single seater (eg Formula Ford / Renault type thing) and a trailer
Anything with a roll cage

I'd go for a Sierra Cosworth RS500! The original super saloon and the one that started it all.
I remember seeing a 500Bhp one at silverstone on a track day. It breathed fire and simply gobbled up everything that stood in it's path. AWESOME!

I'm looking to do this next year, same budget and have started to look around, mines come down to about 4 cars, and ex race/rally spec cossie 400bhp possible, loads out there full cage etc etc, E30 M3 again there's ex race one's out there check stratos-motorsport.com, although this one is 13k with trailer and spares. A Caterham type car or MKII escort, with a proper sorted engine, axle and box etc. I'm looking at race/rally cars at the mo, like the idea of playing with set-ups etc. Although means trailers etc are required, but if it is RAC log booked you could do some small rallies, something like Otterburn ranges, wicked place, used to rally up there in my younger days. I really do need some help in deceiding my choice, all comments welcome.

Well the M3 looks very popular but having pestered one all day at the RS Silverstone day (and me and my car weren't feeling our best) I dont believe the M3 is a significant improvment my scooby although I like the sound of $3800 to spend down the pub
Big Cossies also look popular as they were awesome, but I'd spend most of my time repairing something or other and trying to have the chip surgically removed from my shoulder
The Skyline. Too big. Maybe if it was my primary vehicle and I had no kids
GTi-R? Are we talking Nissan Sunny here?
Lotus 7 replica's (covers all makes) are my favorite, but I wouldn't go as far as John F's Westfield. (See questions below)
The idea of a single seater has caught my eye but you cant give rides in one and although the ability to be road legal is secondary, it is still a requirement. BTW, has anyone seen the 'race' version of the Ariel Atom with its spoilers and wings. Yummy.
O.k. couple more questions.
Would the SIDC let a single seater (Formula Ford, whatever) on a SIDC track day?
Could you get one for £10,000 or under?
What is the lowest spec of Caterham/Westfield that would easily blow away a scooby? and how much would one cost?
Many thanks for your replies, even sunil posted and managed not to muppetise this thread

Evo mag did an article a while back on buying an old one make series vehicle for track days. There were renault spider, rover 220 turbo coupe, clio 16v, tvr and a single seater.
Might be worth getting hold of the article or failing that you could mail Phil Bennett, his web site is

Ok so if your going for a caterham/westfield but don't want to go as far as johnf go for a Throttle Bodied 16v vauxhall engine ( C20XE or 20XE). I'm amazed that GP hasn't been here already... take a look at his site

Dave,
Straying off the mark here, but as a bit of an alternative to going around in circles (flame suit at the ready), why not spend the 10 gees on a sorted Saphire Cossie/Civic VTI/quick Nova or 205, maybe even a well used WRX RA? Send 26 quid to the nice people at the RACMSA for a National B licence, buy a helmet and some sexy overalls, gather together a co-driver and some keen mates for help and support (and when you mention nights away in strange towns drinking beer and chatting up strange women, your mates will be all ears) and play at being Richard Burns by having a go at a tarmac (or better still, forest) rally or two?
I spent my youth doing the Monday-Friday run to work in a Group N Nova GTE, and then picking up trophies in the BTRDA Gold Star championship at weekends (I had no choice- I couldn't afford a road car as well). It worked well: do the event on Saturday, peel off the numbers and hose the **** off the thing onto Mum & Dad's drive on Sunday, back to work on Monday. Great sport, close competition, timed to the second, potential to embarrass quicker cars on the timesheets, top social as well. Happy days...
And just think how good a caged WRX RA would look being towed by your Impreza.
Just a thought.
