Default Quickshift - is it worth it?

Hey there,

Quickshift - what does it actually do, how does it do it, is it pricey? Is it worth it?

I have searched but only found bits n bobs. I need "Quickshift for thickies" !

I'm the same, just thought I would punt a few questions out. I'm tempted because it sounds good, and Im sure it is - just wanna know more.

I paid 99p for my quick shift gear lever from ebay, one of the best mods I did, and for less than a quid.

I had the same on a previous car of mine. just shortens the throw of the gearstick...simple and effective!

Really easy, ball socket on the bottom, and one bolt going through it to attach to the linkage

I see you have a MY00 like me. The throw on my gears feels really short anyway, so I've assumed it was always very short at least on the later models, as standard. As far as I know, I haven't got one fitted, so am also intrigued if it would make any difference.
Do you think that the gear throw is too long as it is, or do you just fancy spending money?

Nah, its that my mate had one years ago on a MY96, and when I saw them available I started to think about it - hence the questions on here.

If it makes sod all difference to a MY00 then I wont bother, but Im keen to know what difference it'll make or if its worth it.

Have also considered this - did a search on here but v inconclusive, some reckon it's the best ever, others that it's a waste of money. I didn't bother in the end (blob STi, meant to be one of the least effective for this mod).

Think the subaru/prodrive version is £250-300; there is a much cheaper version (£60?) which is meant to be more effective as well as cheaper. Forgotten name but might be something like BRM (??)

Got the prodrive quickshift as standard on my RB5, would say it's a very good mod , BUT:

Just go steady when changing into second, blown my second gear twice

B&M quickshift fitted to my MY02 - great mod, as stated above it considerably shortens the throw to just a 'snick' in each direction, gives an altogether sportier (and much heavier) feel to the gearchange

Go for it. Can't comment on fitting difficulty as TSL fitted mine.

Anyone on here got the B&M fitted to their Hawkeye STi?

If so is it an improvement?

I was thinking about it but am sure I read somewhere that it makes the changes really clunky and difficult to find??

The main downside of fitting a quick shift is that it increases the chances of you mis-shifting and thus knackering your gearbox, as described by the gentleman above..

So my advice would be to avoid buying one, as scoobys don't exactly have a long throw gearchange anyway.

Save your money is my advice..

Its good to get a downside being given too, so far its been all good.

Hmmm, Im still very tempted, theres a lot of good words said about them here and I tend to be careful.

dosen't sound like you have you driven an impreza with a good quickshift fitted...I have and even with the close ratio P1 box its a really good positive gear selection; no easier to mis-shift than either a standard UK box (had two of those ), or a standard P1 box.

Just make sure you buy a good one.

I had mine fitted last week and at first thought what have I done. It took a lot more effort to move it into gear (i mean a lot) even powerstation (who fitted it) commented on it but now a week later it has loosened up nicely and come near to the previous gearshift for ease of change. One thing is on the B&M you do get more vibration through the stick but once again this may ease with time. Even so I prefer the shorter more sure gear change that this brings.

No M8 unless it was specced at time of purchase with a Prodrive one. PPP does not include a short shifter

I'm sure the guy who I bought it from told me it had one fitted (he of course may be telling the truth) .... need to try one side by side with one either that I know has or hasn't got one.
