I've owned my LY VX220 for just over a year and am looking at getting an 03 or 04 wrx sti. Though I'd best post here to avoid the abuse I am likely to receive on the VX forum, but has anyone else moved from a VX to an impreza? Opinions on the move? How does the braking/handling compare?

I'm going to go to my local dealer this weekend and drive one. Very much looking forward to the power but not sure how the cornering will compare.

a vx220 is a Sports car and a STI is a saloon car there is a hell of a lot of diffrence, but as you say try before you buy because u might not like it.

hi mate welcome try to strech to the my 05 model year u get a few extras wider track dccd . its worth streching that little bit more.

Having done more reading the 2005 onwards does seem to have a lot more going for it but annoyingly it's just too far out of my price range

have u thought about hawk eye wrx the new 2.5 in them is very strong adn if your going to go the other side of warranty worrys very tunable

And STi's can be taken up to 400bhp very easily, makes it a wrx eater without the option of worrying about the gearbox/brakes/clutch etc

all a wrx would need is a gearbox.... sti brakes suck, and a Wrx weighs less

You would need a turbo, injectors, brakes, gearbox (when it goes) clutch (when it goes) exhaust, remap.
Oh and STi brakes dont suck, just change the pads
You may also find that the STI produces more torque so you could add headers to the list above, the torque and bigger scoop (oh add a new intercooler to the wrx list also ) see its getting pretty expensive for the wrx owner to get to 350 bhp, the STI would cost less for more power and dont get fooled by the power to weight ratio, the gearbox and torque more than make up for that

Well 1st off I have a Hawkeye so some of the above will not count .. A sti would need new exhaust ,turbo brakes (not in the same league as my 6 pot aps) , remap etc… there is £5,000 + to spend gearbox brakes and intercooler would be easy for that amount and you would end up with better aftermarket parts…

I learnt the hard way that it's v expensive to mod a WRX up to a point where it can mix with STi. If i was in the position again, I would definitely get the STi even if it was a couple of years older.

2,000 for a 2.5 wrx to br taken to 350 not your 5,000 and i have seen a read out of a wrx with 370 + with the same clutch and gearbox

You wont get 350 bhp out of a 2.5wrx on its standard turbo so you have to upgrade, your looking at 9k+ for that plus labour, 5k is a full all in package for a JDM, add about 1.5k extra for a uk car (My old car was a 2003 JDM btw ) but pound for pound you will never get a UK wrx to the same (or near) an STi at 350bhp.
Now if you want a nice 350 v 350 bhp comparison, try about 1600 quid for an STI with all the supporting mods/remap etc (fuel pump, exhaust, remap) on a 2/2.5ltr car.
Sorry to say, but your in cookoo land if you think you can mod a 2.5 wrx to 350bhp and even hope to keep up with a similar powered STi in performance/handling/braking for similar money

We all know that 2k spent on a WRX will perhaps see 280bhp but to get much more (350) it is major money as you say.

To the OP.
The guy I bought my STI from, went to a VX220 and a few months later he sold that and bought another STI.

Don't buy a WRX like I and so many others have done, then later regret it.
I had an intersting drive, then subsequent conversation with a (2.5)WRX owner this morning. He is getting his car booked in for a remap/exhaust etc now.

I weighed up the options of modding my WRX but realised that the cost it would take to compete on an even keep with some re-mapped sti was just not worth the money, and so I bought an Sti.

IMHO, its a much better base to build off, the injectors, brakes, tuning is already superior to what the WRX can offer, not slating the good old WRX's because I love mine and still have it, but anythign from here on in for me will be sti's.

I made the same change back in september but I had the 220 turbo.
I would first of all say its a complete different drive and so much comfortabler (if thats a word) Its pretty nice to wake up in the morning without the inside of the windscreen frozen. If i had to make choice now i would keep the VX. So much faster (feels it) and much better to drive. Regretting it slightly now the summer is coming. Though i'm not sure another car in my price bracket could live up to the VX. One thing i certainly dont miss was the unreliablity of the 220. Since owning the STI not one single thing has gone wrong which is probably why i'll keep it (its up for sale at the mo)

Not a VX220, but moved to a Spec. D after two Elises and an Exige, so know how it feels. It's not the same, and I'm still a bit jealous when I seen an Exige, but the STi is more useable and enjoyable for a greater percentage of my time. I get to drive a great car irrespective of weather, it fulfills my performance and family duties, and in comparable terms it's really a bit of bargain.

I also don't think that the Exige could be replaced except with another, so 95% sure I made the right decision.

I just sold my Lotus Elise S 57 and bought a 54 plate WRX.

Reason for selling was that it was just too raw. Missues had no where to put the shopping, in the wet it would slide about. On the motorway in the wet or at night (when wet) was nerve racking. It felt called and even with the heater on my legs were still cold.

Since getting the WRX it feels soo much comfortable, more solid and I feel its faster.

Also when rains or pours I cant wait to get out in the Scooby. Behind the wheel I feel like a Rally driver

i guess in Summer i'll think of the Lotus but fo majority of the time i'll be smiling about my Scoobs

You could never get 350 + on a standard turbo on an sti ????? So the only difference is a intercooler ???? For those figures …. I am not trying to argue with you but I no what is and is not possible as I am doing it and as are many other people with Hawkeye WRXs for the same price as a sti 280 bhp you could have a 370 bhp wrx with up graded brakes and a few other mods arb and alk spring etc

Yet another thread degenerates into two folks "giving their point of view" . How many people newbie's have been put off by this sort of thing. Everyone has different points of view and I'm all up for sensible debate but the thread op asks VX220 to an STI . If you want to have it out start an new thread its simple to do.

Back to the original question, I've never driven a VX220 but I would like to. I imagine the difference would be quite a bit. Test drive which models take your fancy and go from there.
