It will still be £200 -ish.

EDIT- be interesting how they deal with some imports that end up being given the year of importing registration. i.e. a V5 Type R built in 98 but given an 02 number plate.

I 'think' it is the date of registration - isn't it??

So a 1995 car, registered here in the UK in 2001, will be hit for the £400+ tax?

What happens when your car is worth £1000 and the car tax is £750 ... ??

No it won't Pete. It's based on when a car was first built.

So that's a massive blow for importers then.

As far as Ive managed to find out, if you have an import car that has been SVA'd you will be paying according to the new tax bracket - as the SVA tests for emissions...

So, cars that are over 10 years old and don't require a SVA on importing will be paying the old rate.

I think...

mine was imported in 2004 so the rules then there was no co2 emissions on the SVA, but now there are if you where to import now

this is from the DVLA web site

Date of Liability 01 04 2008 Date of First Registration 01 10 2004 Year of Manufacture 2004 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1990CC CO2 Emissions 0g/Km Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Licence Due to Expire Vehicle Colour BLUE Vehicle Type Approval null The information contained on this page is correct at the time of enquiry. Vehicle Excise Duty Rate for vehicle 6 Months Rate £101.75 12 Months Rate £185.00
slight worrying thing is I have paid for the new tax!!! and it says licence due to expire LOL

I guess the emissions test on the SVA is a new thing then, so anyone lucky to not get tested is OK...

The DVLA site is ambiguous. If you look at the following:-
The cost of vehicle tax for cars, motorcycles, light goods vehicles and trade licences : Directgov - Motoring
it just mentions when the car was registered, it does not specify when registered in the UK.

But if you download the pdf file http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum...&Rendition=Web
the table for Band G states "Cars registered in the UK on or after 23rd March 2006", though the other tables don't mention where registered.

I imported my MY99 in 2006*, but the V5 doesn't have a CO2 reading. My understanding is that because it was first registered in 1998 (and it says this on the V5) then I think the standard PLG road fund duty for >1549cc is what applies, that's all I've ever paid.

* It was my car when I lived in Japan, so the car only required a standard SVA test instead of the ESVA tests which the vast majority of imports have to have.
