Ineresting to see what wins....
Result = Golf 2 seconds a lap quicker!
Not only does the Impreza look crap it performs in the same manor.

The Impreza was owned by a car in the same market sector with FWD and less power.
It's confirmed that Subaru have really scored a home goal.
The 'You'll av em in the twisties m8' argument no longer stands

When the latest GTI came out there was a group test (track) in EVO which included a blob wagon, golf GTI and a 182 amongst others.
IIRC the 182 won it (partly due to the value for money, as well as being an fantastically fun car), the WRX came second, with the golf third.
Interestingly there wasn't much in the lap time between 1st/2nd, but ~3 seconds to 3rd..!
I thought this new hatch was supposed to handle better, especially around a track. Or is this only applicable to the STI..?
Maybe Subaru should have stuck to their original plan of NOT supplying the WRX in the UK as it's looking like a right turkey..!

Wow, I read the forum a lot but never really post, but I had to dig out my account details for this.
I just watched 5th gear, I know not many people like the looks (me included) but thats down to personal taste I guess, but its a sad day when a golf wipes the floor with a WRX. I know my blob eye WRX is PPP'd, but I've never looked in my mirror and thought "better pull over there's a Golf behind me".
With the Price of V power and a lack of a decent replacement for my now 3 year old baby, looks like its time to bow to the eco monkies and get a diesel, nothing else in my price range is going to give me the same fun as a scoob, so I might as well grow up and get boring .

cptcaveman just wait for the diesel WRX/STI and get it mapped....
May take a while, but worth the wait !
IMHO
Golf GTI DSG 30th edition, list £23,875
Subaru Impreza WRX list price £20,000
Subaru Impreza STI list price, £25,000
STI looks cheap next to a Golf !
£4K on a WRX should see 2 seconds a lap sorted....
LOL
DunxC
P.S. I quite liked the 2008 STI to drive, but £16,000 cost to change means not buying one !

A sad day indeed. I didn't realise the new WRX had only 230BHP but I thought it's slay the Golf round their track. Oh dear.
It used to be that Imprezas were rally cars in an elite league just below Porsches, Astons, etc. (in terms of performance). Over the last few years, Ford, GM, Renault, etc. have stepped their game up with their hot hatches, basically bringing them closer to Impreza/Lancer performance, whereas Subaru have gone backwards with this model and created a more traditional hot hatch by performance but not in price.
Not a great move.

A sad day indeed, its a shame because i think Subaru have really narrowed their Target Market. Its going to be the guy who drives the Legacy buying the Mrs a WRX to do the school runs!

yes yes, but the new Impreza is not meant to be fast. Its meant to be a grown up version of the old breed, having moved on with the times. Much like the fat Mk3 Golf GTi was that just about everyone hated
I think the only difference is that VAG was large enough to ride out the storm. The Impreza was about the only car that used to sell over here in Subaru's range. I think this is the end of IM. Not even the STI is going to get them out of this mess, unless its awesome to drive and they manage to get more people to like the looks.

i think its a discrace the new wrx looks so bad i cant believe they brought it out and now its obviously not got the performance to make up for it, which is one thing you could always turn round and say if someone said your scooby looked crap. just out of principle my next car will be to the dark side, an evo .

I don't get it?
WRX was quoted as "better power to weight ratio", "4 wheel drive so better traction", "can get the power down earlier in the bends", and "quicker to 60". Use the handbrake to make it chuckable.
The only reason given for the Golf being faster was "it turned in better". I don't see that making it 2 seconds quicker.
What was the real reason? Is it all about understeer again. PS never mentioned the relative prices.
