Impreza v Golf GTI on 5th gear now!

Ineresting to see what wins....

Result = Golf 2 seconds a lap quicker!
Not only does the Impreza look crap it performs in the same manor.

blu scoob 17 March 2008 09:04 PM

dont buy a subaru

NACRO 17 March 2008 09:05 PM

WRX 2 seconds slower than an unmapped MKV GTi :D

Dracoro 17 March 2008 09:07 PM

Announcement!
Here follows a list of excuses by the subaru party...

Varboy 17 March 2008 09:09 PM

The Impreza was owned by a car in the same market sector with FWD and less power.

It's confirmed that Subaru have really scored a home goal.

The 'You'll av em in the twisties m8' argument no longer stands;)

powerman1 17 March 2008 09:16 PM

Women drivers ....to start the defense....wheres me hat and coat i'm out of here

nik52wrx 17 March 2008 09:18 PM

Yeah but, yeah but, if it had been raining the Impreza would have had it :lol1:

SPIDERWRX 17 March 2008 09:37 PM

looks like they are trying to get people who would have got a wrx to buy the STI..

wrxs sold alot more than the sti in blobeye form

i bet the blobeye wrx wood have match the golf gti

looks like they have made a soft WRX

GrahamG 17 March 2008 09:42 PM

horrible car!

jasonius 17 March 2008 09:46 PM

^^^

When the latest GTI came out there was a group test (track) in EVO which included a blob wagon, golf GTI and a 182 amongst others.

IIRC the 182 won it (partly due to the value for money, as well as being an fantastically fun car), the WRX came second, with the golf third.

Interestingly there wasn't much in the lap time between 1st/2nd, but ~3 seconds to 3rd..!

I thought this new hatch was supposed to handle better, especially around a track. Or is this only applicable to the STI..?

Maybe Subaru should have stuck to their original plan of NOT supplying the WRX in the UK as it's looking like a right turkey..!

F1 CJE UK 17 March 2008 09:52 PM

i agree they seem to have watered down the wrx ..... sad day

*AL* 17 March 2008 10:06 PM

The WRX is shockingly ugly and rather slow.Laughable i think.

cptcaveman 17 March 2008 10:14 PM

Wow, I read the forum a lot but never really post, but I had to dig out my account details for this.

I just watched 5th gear, I know not many people like the looks (me included) but thats down to personal taste I guess, but its a sad day when a golf wipes the floor with a WRX. I know my blob eye WRX is PPP'd, but I've never looked in my mirror and thought "better pull over there's a Golf behind me".

With the Price of V power and a lack of a decent replacement for my now 3 year old baby, looks like its time to bow to the eco monkies and get a diesel, nothing else in my price range is going to give me the same fun as a scoob, so I might as well grow up and get boring :( .

SPIDERWRX 17 March 2008 10:20 PM

a very very sad day :-(

why is anyone going to buy the NEW WRX????

Varboy 17 March 2008 10:23 PM

Because they have poor taste and are probably not die hard fans.

Mr Bat 17 March 2008 10:24 PM

Damn I missed it. Did it have lots of hideous bodyroll? (The car, not that fat cow)

pslewis 17 March 2008 10:24 PM

why is anyone going to buy the NEW WRX????

Because it's £16k?

ScoobyDoo69 17 March 2008 10:26 PM

£16k since when?

not a uk one

dunx 17 March 2008 10:34 PM

cptcaveman just wait for the diesel WRX/STI and get it mapped....

May take a while, but worth the wait !

IMHO

Golf GTI DSG 30th edition, list £23,875
Subaru Impreza WRX list price £20,000
Subaru Impreza STI list price, £25,000

STI looks cheap next to a Golf !
£4K on a WRX should see 2 seconds a lap sorted....

LOL

DunxC

P.S. I quite liked the 2008 STI to drive, but £16,000 cost to change means not buying one !

ScoobyDoo69 17 March 2008 10:40 PM

Was this a 30th anniversary that it went against then?

ChungsterSTI 17 March 2008 10:48 PM

Nope bog standard normal 200ps (197bhp) version.

dunx 17 March 2008 10:53 PM

That's even worse, as I missed the first couple of minutes....

Sad day !

DunxC

P.S. I can't afford a WRX either....

Mystik Journeyman 17 March 2008 10:54 PM

A sad day indeed. I didn't realise the new WRX had only 230BHP but I thought it's slay the Golf round their track. Oh dear.

It used to be that Imprezas were rally cars in an elite league just below Porsches, Astons, etc. (in terms of performance). Over the last few years, Ford, GM, Renault, etc. have stepped their game up with their hot hatches, basically bringing them closer to Impreza/Lancer performance, whereas Subaru have gone backwards with this model and created a more traditional hot hatch by performance but not in price.

Not a great move.

S7EVY 17 March 2008 11:04 PM

A sad day indeed, its a shame because i think Subaru have really narrowed their Target Market. Its going to be the guy who drives the Legacy buying the Mrs a WRX to do the school runs!

What a mess!!,

Luminous 17 March 2008 11:08 PM

yes yes, but the new Impreza is not meant to be fast. Its meant to be a grown up version of the old breed, having moved on with the times. Much like the fat Mk3 Golf GTi was that just about everyone hated :lol1:

I think the only difference is that VAG was large enough to ride out the storm. The Impreza was about the only car that used to sell over here in Subaru's range. I think this is the end of IM. Not even the STI is going to get them out of this mess, unless its awesome to drive and they manage to get more people to like the looks.

holdup 17 March 2008 11:19 PM

i think its a discrace the new wrx looks so bad i cant believe they brought it out and now its obviously not got the performance to make up for it, which is one thing you could always turn round and say if someone said your scooby looked crap. just out of principle my next car will be to the dark side, an evo .

ScoobyDoo69 17 March 2008 11:49 PM

So you'll compare a WRX to an EVO when you go to buy then and not the STI? :p

speedking 18 March 2008 12:19 AM

I don't get it?

WRX was quoted as "better power to weight ratio", "4 wheel drive so better traction", "can get the power down earlier in the bends", and "quicker to 60". Use the handbrake to make it chuckable.

The only reason given for the Golf being faster was "it turned in better". I don't see that making it 2 seconds quicker.

What was the real reason? Is it all about understeer again. PS never mentioned the relative prices.
