What does the 'R' stand for
What's the 'R' for on the classic STI's, and do the Sti type R's have anything over the Sti. (not RA's)

Retna....denotes the two door shell.
And yes the sti type r has a a few mechanical advantages over the sti.
Such as gearbox ratio,dccd,abs etc

i think the RA is Race Altered too as it is the closest you can get to the earlier rally cars.

RA V-Limited and Type R's have the R180 Rear Diff and I think a Helical Front Diff (as aposed to an open diff)

The version 4 v-limited, and version 5/6 limited sti ra have the helical front diff.
The sti type r have the open front type diff.....

Sure I saw somewhere that the RA-R was Record Attempt - Racy, and as you say was connected to the 'Ring record. Never sure if it was a wind up or not
