WRC320 experience
#1
Thinking about the Impreza WRC320 from Warrender just can't bring myself to buy an EVO. Do any of you lot own or have any experience of this monster. It eats Jap market STI 7's and bog Evo's for breakfast by all accounts?!?
Cheers in advance,

Warrender Impreza STi 320
Price £31,415
Engine 4 cyls horizontally opposed, 1994cc; 320bhp/6400rpm; 300lb ft/4200rpm (est)
Gearbox 6-speed manual
Brakes 294mm ventilated discs (f), 266mm ventilated discs (r)
Anti-lock Yes
Tyres 225/45 ZR17, Bridgestone RE040
Weight 1400kg
Power-to-weight 229 bhp/tonne
Mph/1000rpm in top 22.7
Autocar Quote:
"Up steps the STi. Amazing what an angry looking 4" exhaust can do: it makes the STi one of the naughtiest sounding motors we've driven all year.
Porsche 911 (turbo) aside, the tweaked Impreza was the most spectacular car off the line all day. It simply screams away: 30mph takes just 1.59sec - quickest of the day - and 60mph flashes by in 4.57sec. But 20bhp down or not, it beats the Evo (WRC340) to 100mph, clocking 11.56sec.
If only it had been easier to stop. Ultimate braking performance was actually better than the Evo, 100-0mph requiring 4.47sec, but we couldn't get on the brakes as quickly."
Warrender supposedly offer a further upgrade taking it to 350bhp.
Induction kit, fuel pump, dump valve, exhaust, etc all upgraded by Warrender using HKS parts I believe.
Sounds pretty fooking amazing to me!!

My friend bought the EVOWRC340 as featured in Autocar (the black one last year.
That has been timed to the tonne in the low 10's and hits 60 in 4 dead (using proper timing equipment). On the twisties I can safely say virtually nothing on the planet will stay with it. Around the track it has humbled everything it has met.
Suprised no one on here has heard of these before. Check out the Warrender website on www.warrender.co.uk

I ownthe famous WRC320 you guys have seen in the mags and the long and should of it is (without showing off) It's the business.
At the donnington track day late last year I had a chance to try it out for myself and there were very few cars that could keep up with it. The balance is fantastic it lets you feel everything that is going on. The only car that beat it on the day was the Warrender 380 Evo VII and that, I believe was because it was my first time out on a trackday.
Love.

I'm sure it's very nice.
Am always interested to see how these WRC320, 340R, etc etc cars go against cars with proven HP, not against other std cars.
Not a dig, just a personal observation after seeing some of these cars go on track and down a strip.

Why is there always a doubting thomas?
We were up against many different cars from an escort van to a GT2 and a GTR600 both very quick porkers.
there were many Evo VII's there as there were EVO VI's a few imprezas but nothing special.
RC developments had two six's with 380bhp tested and proven by many mags these were quick but were hauled in by the STI320 and subsequenly passed.
OK!?
Still love you.

Incidently the reviewer in Auto Car was not in receipt of the correct facts re the brakes.
They are 330mm at the freont and 315mm at the back.
They also had standard road pads and discs on the STI (uprated on the evo VII) where now we have some trick Japanese things that feel as if they are capable of making the car do stoppies. The car tested was on standard rubber OEM stuff, (now on Bridgestones' finest).
All this will no doubt help it to be an even better all round car. One thing the evo will never be.

So an EVO had 380hp, but the STI had only 320hp, yet it hauled in and passed it?
Damn, those EVOs must be heavy
Not a doubting thomas. Seen for myself thanks.
320HP Scoob vs GT2 Porker.
1/4 mile for the Scoon - 122.8ish and 106 maybe? roughly?
1/4 mile for the GT2 - 12.2 @ 129. Not that close huh.
If the power is proven i have no probelm with it.
If it's a pie in the sky figure?

Scottdg,
Owner of the Black STi as seen tested in Banzai against the Nissan Pulsar (GTi-R) sometimes frequents this BBS, but not right often.
It's used in Hillclimbs and Sprints. Can be seen at Harewood and on the Mid Cheshire Championship. I competed against it in the 2000 (or was it 1999) series in my modified UK. It was very quick Blow a piston trying to match his times
Cheers

So you recommend it Joseph!
Is there anywhere on the net that I can get more info on the WRC320, other than the Warrender site?
Cheers,
Scottdg
PS. Blackscooby, I was actually meaning the grey STI with black morrettes in the Gathering of the Gods article that posted a 0-60 of 3.7 and 0-100 in 9.ish seconds. That is not a typo error by the way!!

hmmm - not knocking RC developments but...
I have had a long tech talk with the guy from RC who does the conversion - they are basically just adding the same turboXS twin screw manual boost controller as they use on the EVO 7 340 - they then cover the controller up to stop owners tinkering with the screws - no other changes to fuelling etc. - I also asked what monitoring they used to decide what the safe levels were - didn't sound much more than just listening for det with cans.
By all accounts the VF30 has a lot more puff than older IHI units and can probably stand a bit more boost than standard but I would be worried about this approach without other mods or adjusting to compensate for crappy uk fuel.
also, I believe the duty cycle on the injectors is maxed out - probably also approaching the limit for the fuel pump.
It is notable that the STI RA spec C has claimed output of 320 ps - yet the sti engineers see fit to change the fuel pump, turbo and revisit the ECU - I think this says it all really.
oh, and that huge exhaust on the 320 looks silly too ;-)
verdict - you could do better for the money.
just personal oppinion mind you

I and John Harley fitted a £26 manual boost controller to Sam Elassar's Evo 7 which had conrod bolts from factory (£70 IIRC) and an exhaust. It made 371bhp at Star performance. Even if this figure is optimistic it is still impressive. Apparently everything on the 7 is factory read for 1.45-1.5 bar according to Ralliart.
Me I would buy a 7 and put a good EBC on it with appropriate safety monitoring.
