Whereabouts did you fit the thing? Did you use an existing vac. tube or tap the actual manifold? I`ve been considering one in my 99my but cant seem to see a suitable installation point.

I know this was discussed fairly recently but has anyone had it fitted and found any benefits. The Evo guys seem to rate it for fuel economy and midrange performance.

Fitted one to my P1 about two weeks ago.
It gave an improvement at low revs/off boost as the car seemed more responsive and pulled better. One of those performance meters wouldn't go amiss here.
I understand that there is no benefit when "on boost", as the positive press in the manifold shuts the Ecotek valve, but it should improve fuel economy at a constant speed(motorways etc) when there is a vacuum in the manifold which will effect the pulsating airflow, causing turbulence and thus giving a "better" fuel/air mixture.
I can't give results on fuel economy yet as shortly after fitting I tore the ligaments in my shoulder and cant drive for 6 weeks
I hate being chaufered but then a few drinks soon puts that to bed .

Have a Happy Xmas

I've only heard positive things about this device and being adjustable makes it even better. Now I know it doesn't work when the engine is on boost, I am confident it won't hurt the engine. Might give it a try. Anyone got a picture of where is the best place to fit it?

They suggest that you fit the Ecotek in the brake servo hose that connects to the manifold. This is not suitable, as it joins on one of the manifold branches and would therefore only affect the fuel/air going into that cylinder.
I am trying it in the dump v/v vacuum hose which goes right into the centre of the manifold.
Given the small quantity of air that this device is drawing in it does not seem to have affected the operation of the dump valve due to any loss of vacuum in the line.
Hope this helps.
Happy Xmas

Exclamation

Anyone else got any input?! Surely more than 1 person has fitted one?

Cheers

Question

Er, excuse me for obviously having my head buried in the sand, but WTF is this device? Saw an advert for it in FC this month and thought it looked like the bleed valve I used to have on my 'Scort S1 Turbo... How does it work?

I too have been sorely tempted by one of these, who would'nt be with todays fuel prices!!

But as NIGE K said, the servo hose isn't the place to fit it.

I will look again now at the dump valve line and reconsider.

I too have been following the various postings on the ectoec and still remain a little dubious about fitting one to my pride and joy.

It seems to me that the easiest way to sort out the fitting problem and to obtain some objective figures for economy gains would be to get ecotecplc to support us in testing them.

Reading the News section of the ecotec web site there are statements made about the XROC and the Saab Owners club having units on test. Surely with over 2000 members the SIDC should be able to get ecoctec to support a true test of this device on a number of Scoobs, and possibly offer a small discount for a group buy

Just an idea...

Why don't car manufacturers use a similar type device if it really works?

Orville, I can't remember which manufacturer but one of them has started to use a similar device on their cars. It just creates turbulance in the inlet manifold and mixes the fuel and air better giving a better burn = better response + bit better fuel ecomomy. I had one of these devices on my previous car (Peugeot 405 SRI) and it worked, despite my doubts at first.

WORD OF WARNING TO ALL THOUGH! Get the optional filter for it as my valve stopped working after about 2000 miles and needed cleaning + the valve makes a weird noise and the filter makes it quieter. If the valve was getting dirt in, then the engine must of been getting some in as well!

Question

Another question: When fuel consumption goes down what is with detonation? I mean better fuel economy with better burn = possible problem with detonation or they have nothing to do with it?

Errr the question of why don't manufacturers use these devices:-

Actually the new 01MY Turbo does!!!

They have a TGV (Tumble Generator Valve) in each branch of the inlet manifold near to the heads.

This (according to Subaru Blurb) improves low end torque & emissions, which when you think about it is probably true as it obviously leans the mixture out at low revs.

Interesting that Subaru put one in each BRANCH and not just whack a single one in the middle a la Ecotek.

Hmmmmmm......

I think Nissan uses a similar device in their 1.8 engine for the new primera as well.

The priciple of this has been around the tuning world for many years and the turbulence effect can be achieved by a number of different methods. Andrew, I like your idea, I'll check it out with the other SIDC committee members and Ecotek to see whether we can arrange a semi-scientific test on one or more Scoobs, and discounts all-round.

done that but it doesn't list the Scoob. I also wanted feedback from Scooby owners and not just take their word for it!
