Default Is it true ?

was looking up a few web sites for prices on cars and one of them for the cons of owning a scooby reported - huge repair bills, renew turbo and driveshafts halfway through their life span.

how long is 1/2 way through their lifespan ? Anybody had to change their turbo or driveshafts and at what mileage/age.

just how dear are the repair bills ?

always thought scoobies were very reliable anyway.

Default Engine more likely to fail

i brought my 2001 classic in 2005, 6 months later the engine melted a piston and scored the bore meaing i needed to pay API £3100 for a new short engine,

People will say its all down to maintainence but i did everything correct and it still went, i am known for looking after my cars so get annoyed when people say its always down to using the right fuel or not thrashing it, since the engine went and was replaced i have had my heart in my mouth incase it does it again, i cant manage another £3100 for a car thats only worth about £6500 now

thats just the engine so who knows when the gearbox, driveshafts or anything else £1000 plus may give up,

I hope things have changed with the newer cars but i know that a lot of classc owners have had the same problem albeit through poor maintence,

The funny thing is when peoples engine do go the general responce on scoobynet is that 'Hey, **** happens, you want a scooby you got to pay the price'

My attitude is that the impreza is a great car and one of the best i have owned- while its on the road and not broke

Generally they ARE very reliable.

Of course you are occasionally going to have engines/gearboxes/etc go, but then thats the same with ANY type of car.

Repair bills are big - but what newish car doesn't have big repair bills when something goes wrong now?

A Mr J Clarkson of the IOM once said something along the lines of

"I receive hundreds of letters each month complaining that the car I recommended keeps breaking down/going wrong. Funny thing is they're never form Subaru drivers."

I've never had a problem with my sport or heard too much about standard wrx's/sti's. I think the **** starts flying when you start tuning/straining components beyond the design limits. throwing 350-400bhp at a transmission designed for 225-300 is going to cause problems. But that's just my 2p.

Waits for the flaming........................................... .................................

The same gentleman also made a remark along the lines of "Subaru's are so reliable they make Hondas look like Central-American dictators" not so many weeks ago.

Subarus are utterly bullet-proof ...... unless you play about with them!!

Subaru know how to build a reliable car, they also know how to build a fast car .... their skill is knowing how to do that and they are the very best in the world at pulling that trick off.

Thats the reason the Mappers do not offer a warranty - because pissing about beyond what Subaru have done is turning a Subaru into a TVR in the reliability stakes!

I have had my Impreza Turbo since new in May 2000. The only thing I have allowed myself in terms of mods. is a backbox. It has been impecable in its reliability.

?????? There must be thousand of tuned Subaru’s on here that have and are very reliable…Are you speaking from knowledge ???

badly tuned car are unreliable what ever make or model. scoobys are better than most brands mate. Just look after her and she will do the same back.

Is that not more to do with the high percentage of owners that have modified there cars. It also depends on what level of modification your going for. Things will break if your pushing the envelope then you replace the broken parts with improved aftermarket parts and continue the process

Not too sure about that ....

To my mind, taking an engine outside of its design envelope is reducing its life - of course, a poorly modified car will not last as long as a well modified one - but, my point remains valid (IMO) that a well modified car will not last as long as one left well alone and well within its design parameters.

Since 1997 I been let down twice:-
1st. a dodgy connection on a cam sensor, 20 minute fix under warranty.
2nd. flat battery due to some dork leaving the stereo on all weekend.

Yup me !

5th gear syncro went at 33,000mile on my classic which pissed me right off after looking for a low mileage car to save aggro/expense,mate bought a classic also and at around 45,000mile melted piston-mines basically std apart from filter and exhaust, lee`s with the piston just had exhaust std airbox everything-both cars had full dealer service history.

So errr yer both pretty pissed off at the time although lee`s were still under warranty so not so bad however his went again due to maf showing no fault code but being dodgy, subaru again repaired under warranty, lee got it bk and sold it ASAP-werent many months of warranty left and as has already been said ya just cant afford these things to be a regular occurence.

As for comment above about engine problems being the same for most manufacturers-in this performance bracket to an extent maybe, however only problem car ive really owned yrs an yrs ago were a Series 2 escort RS turbo-all the rests been no bother at all really.

Had a 106gti for 43,000 mile from new an it cost me a ABS wheel sensor and 2 new wishbones(due to the bilsteins knackering balljoints/bushes but expected these to wear out quicker)

I know its not like for like however regarding mine really werent expecting a gearbox stripdown for a problem with top gear syncro(hardly like 4th to 5th is 1st to 2nd where it does get some grief) at 33,000mile.

Unfortunately i do expect a engine rebuild sometime, i just reckon some of the high milers on here have already been rebuilt at some stage whilst a previous owners had it

Well, mine has 85,000miles on it and it hasn't missed a beat - I am the original owner

Leave them alone and they are as solid as a solid thing
