even the first wrxs came with them (not all).
example my 93wrx is meant to have a td05 16g turbo but no ,it's got a vf12 (second stage turbo from a legacy) so in the early days i think they just grabbed what they had on the shelf

This thread shows you how to tell if it's closed deck or open deck:

Only the early series cars had a closed deck block.

A friend just had his Bugeye rebuild with a closed deck block made from a non closed deck. It involves welding up the block deck and re-machining - very trick

As said above - Early Vers.1 had CDB and the STi V2 RA were CDB.
I have also seen a couple of cross over blocks ( Vers.2 - 3 ) which were open deck with Bore Squirters.

My ver 2 STI V-Limited has a closed deck fitted, had it confirmed when I put on stronger head gaskets and bolts on

You can tell if the block is open or closed by looking for hash markings behind the alternator belt - if these markings are there, it's closed deck.
