A few quick P1 Question...
Hi all and happy Friday.
I have been into Scoobs for about 10 years now (owned a couple of standard WRXs) and the one I have always hankered after is the P1.
Im getting married in 2 months so if I dont go and get one now I never will. I can almost here the pound notes flying out my pocket.
This is probably a daft question but I have seen loads of P1s advertised that have had engine rebuilds. Is it better to go for one thats already had the engine rebuilt? Is it a given that if I buy one on 60-70k miles then an engine rebuild is inevitable so to put £3k+ aside? I am far from mechanical so excuse the ignorance but is an engine thats had a full proper rebuild as good pre bang? I would obviously only consider a mint example with full history either way.
So for instance is a 2000 plate P1 on 70k miles on its orginal engine a better or worse prospect than the same car with a rebuilt engine?
It makes sense in my head.
All the best.

A rebuild isn't inevitable, but I'd keep around £3k handy to pay for a rebuilt engine if it hasn't had one recently by a respected garage. I'd go for one with a rebuild, better yet, get a P1 that needs a rebuild.

It depends on the price difference but as rightly mentioned to be on the safe side I would put away a few k just in case...
I would not be put off by a P1 that has had a rebuild especially if it was a recent one with reciepts etc. If I had the choice of 2 P1's that were same price, condition, mileage etc but one had already had a rebuilt engine...I would opt for the rebuilt one.
Good luck. Im too on the look out for a P1 or a blob sti

Good luck with your search.
A never regretted buying mine.
Worth travelling for a good well maintained car.
There is a superb one in Scotland for sale.
One of the very few with a Subaru original sunroof, check out the ads on here.
Engine problems have been blown a bit out of proportion but servicing and using the correct fuel is high on the list of priorities and not too many long distance maximum speed runs up to 150+mph as this does not do the engine much good as air is deflected over the Scoop on the bonnet.
Check out the P1web owners club, for all the info you require.

Thanks a lot for the info. Got in touch with Jap Performance and the one for sale there has 101k on the clock. Engine rebuilt at 75k. Thats probably higer mileage than I would like to be honest. Realistically I will have it for 2 years so would be looking at selling it on with 115k miles.
Id be prepared to travel anywhere in the UK to be honest if I could find one in the right condition for the right price (even bonny Scotland!). I managed to get a half decent insurance quote today which has sealed the deal so its now a matter of finding one.
Ill let you know how I get on. Thanks again for the advice.

IMHO priced WAY too high. You'll have trouble shifting that for £7k in a few years time. I'd hold out for a lower miler, or one much cheaper than that. BTW, you have to look at who did the rebuild too, not just any old garage.

Saw one in Devon the other day for sale. £11K 56,000 miles one previous owner, I'd describe it as immaculate. It's a private sale by a guy who works for a car trimmer in Ivybridge.

Cheers for your responses. Really stuggling to find a good one within budget.
10 - 12k initial outlay + 3k put aside for a possible engine rebuild + 450 quid servicing every 7000 miles + 15-20mpg with current petrol prices = Not the best car to buy a few weeks before my wedding.
2002 STI with PPP for about the same price is starting to look an attractive alternative (is that about 300bhp?). Will still be a ****** on fuel I know but hopefully not be as big a money pit as the P1 - famous last words.
Im liking the Prodrive "styled" Bugeyes. Im sure this has been asked a hundred times before but do they come with the Prodrive performance upgrades as well or is it purely a normal STI styled by PD? So effectively should I be looking for a Prodrive "Styled" STI with PPP? Make sense? And is 10k a realistic budget for one?
I change my mind like the wind. It will be an RB5 tomorrow. Ive got to get a new scoob soon before swans made of ice and grannys new hat eat into my budget. Weddings schmeddings.

So for instance this Subaru : 02 wrx sti type uk prodrive would be standard STI performance, i.e 260 ish Bhp plus the added few horses for the exhaust? Is it possible to revert a Bailey dump valve back to standard? Im not a massive fan (thats the whooshey noise when you change gear right??). Depending on service history\previous owners etc I might arrange a viewing.....

Every service isn't £450, it should cost no more to service than any new shape, (try independent specialists) Low quoted mpg is only if you thrash it everywhere, and you should be able to get a good one for below £10k.

Get the P1 with a rebuild or one needing one, and budget for a re-map too!
Check out the performance stats of the P1 too
Less weight means better fuel economy
My Mrs's P1 does around 320 miles/tank and pushes out 316Bhp / 298lb/ft
Saw off a DB9 yesterday too

372.2 to be accurate, but why bother, you'll probably post another childish 'your mum' comment.
