Default Help!, my stolen Scoob Nightmare

Hi,

I am basically in need of advice as just over a week ago my house was broken into and the car was taken. 6 days later the car was being chased by the police which resulted in it going head on with a corsa then was eventually stopped by a wall.

not only did the thieves scare the living **** out of my wife they drove around in our car for a week before trashing it. I was first told by my insurance company that it was being written off, they then call me today to day it is going to a garage for an estimate as they may be able to repair it for me..... like that are doing us a favour!
under no circumstances do i want that car back. i feel that under the circumstances, the transmission will probably have been hammered to death etc that it is crazy to try and give me the car back.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of anything I can say, demand or any laws etc that prevent them giving me the car back.

below is a link to a news article about it. car is an 02 51 reg wagon.

Three Due In Court After Crash (from Bradford Telegraph and Argus)

thanks,

Neil

I presume they will use a Subaru dealer, which will help as the labour & parts may exceed the value. I would have thought you have the choice whether to have the car back. I mean if they write it off, then you can buy it back, which is more common.

As I recall aright, if the damage including the VAT is more than 30% of the value of the car, it's a write off.

Get your own independent repair costs and values together.

If the car is written off without any hassle, you'll need the values to wring more out of the insurers anyway.

thats bullsh*t straight away. my car is valued around £4-4.5k by my insurers. back in april last year it needed repairing, and the cost exceeded £2000, and it was never mentioned about it being written off.

do most insurers not work on a value between 50-60%? 30% sounds way too low.

I dont think 30% is true either, I know a Ferrari thats only worth 30k but it had a 20k repair on the insurance after a corsa rear ended it!

Always thought it was 40%.. Had a 3K prelude have a grands wirth done to it before now, but they wrote of my toyota carina, but the car was only worth as much as one of my shoes

It's MUCH higher than anyone has said. I know of a car where the repairs were £2400, and the car was valued at £3200. It was not written off.

IIRC, it's only if the vehicle is under 12 months old, and repairs are going to cost more than 50% of the value of the vehicle, that it's written off.

After that, it's up to the insurers to say if it's "economically repairable".

cheers, 60% sounds hopeful, as i belive the cost must surely be up around the 4k mark. hopefully some expensive bits are broken. cant belive im sat here wanting them to write my beloved impreza off! but i would have to sell it anyway. the wife insists as she will not feel safe in the house with it on the drive.

I was always told that it boiled down to it simply costing more to repair than replace. When I worked for the Royal in Leeeverpewl La back in the day they didnt play %ages...
Anyhoo, I wouldnt want it back either fella...

the front end looks pretty stoved in from that so may need an engine build if the belts have been struck by the rad, if so its a write off

Looking at that picture it appears to have taken a rather hefty knock to the front (concrete walls will do that!) So it's not just the chassis and body work that's bent, IIRC the chances are it will have buggered the cam pulleys etc and that means a bent valve and that means and new/rebuilt engine. Not looking economical to me!

Condolences mate; sh*tty thing to happen. Hope it gets sorted to your satisfaction.

Looking at the picture, thats at least 5k to fix so it will be written off, no doubt about it.

i had a mini cooper valued at £8.5k when some biddy hit me head on.
The estimate was for £5k and the insurance had it repaired sold it a couple of weeks later (and it didn't go on the hpi register????)

I doubt that is going to be economic to repair to be honest!

seeing the picture, that is a fairly crumpled front end and the engine would have been affected, and probably transmission and diffs etc. Dont know what the value of the car would be, but bodywork alone would probably be a few k, then rad prob hoses, then whateve engine works etc, lights bumpers etc etc

hi fellas, just to update the car was recovered to my hometown today from bradford where it was found, so i went and had a look, basically the insurance have wasted a few days of my time as the car is absolutely ****ed. the steering wheel is touching the clocks, every panel is crumpled, the intercooler is nearly touching the stereo, the dash is all bent, basically nothing is where it should be and everyting except the tailgate and wheels is salvage. thank god TBH.

the garage still have to quote to make it official though. what a joke, just wasting more time as they are doing it monday, they have told me it will be a write off for sure though.

The main frme will be distorted. Subaru don't supply replacement main frames, so insist that it's written off. You don't want it twisted back to (nearly) the right shape.

I had a Range Rover written off at 30% by the NFU.

I was fine with that as they paid me £3,600 more than I'd bought it for 6 months earlier!
