Default hey im new :D

hi im new
i have a MG ZR 1.4 105bhp whiich i like and is fun to drive but ive always wanted a scooby but only being 17 i wouldnt beable to afordone on insurence or so i thought... after research i found out i can get insured with my dad on any of the non turbo series and seriously thinking of swaping mine for a non turbo impreza id have about £2500 for one which looking around should get me a decent enough one
also with the ZR its sort of falling to bits
is the build quality on the non turbo's good?
are they powerful ?
whats the sort of bhp?
just general opinions of the swap qould be nice
thanks
alex

Default Welcome

Welcome to SN. I currently drive a moded wrx which I have owned for 2 years. Prior to this I had a classic sport wagon. Really loved this car. Very reliable and safe. I had a decent cat back exhaust and cold air intake on with some lowering springs and a decent set of wheels and tyres. Car was pretty quick and handled like a dream. It may not be a turbo but you still get to own and enjoy a scooby. For the cash you are looking to spend I would defo stay clear of a turbo and go for a sport which will most probably have noy been hashed or moded.

Good luck!

Welcome to SNet.

The usual advice to lads like yourself who come on here desperate to join in the party is to just wait until you can do it properly. There are much better cars out there than the Sport which you can afford to run. They'll be faster, may handle better, will be cheaper to run and overall more satisfying over the long term. Hard to accept, but the most sensible advice I can offer you. Build up your experience and your NCD for a few years, and if you're really clever, spend as little on silly car stuff between now and the day you can walk into the party head held high in a real Impreza. By the time your 20 or so you could be well on the way, as long as the cash for the car, insurance, ubiquitous mods, petrol, more petrol, tax (which by then may be £2k ) and some fetching blue clothing so you fit in properly and even more petrol hasn't been wasted on farty exhausts, neon washer jets, Lexus lights and BigMacs.

I loved owning my Scoob, and would have it back or a better one tomorrow if I could justify it. Unfortunately I've grown old and wise enough to realize that they are a great toy for people with either limited responsibilities or plentiful resources. Right now I don't have the time to enjoy it, the money to pay for it or the need to own one. It used to cost me in excess of £100/wk to run the Scoob, allowing for finance, tax, ins, fuel, servicing and mods. I sold it and invested the cash in a business and my new car can now outdrag many Scoobs, achieve 60+mpg, £115 tax, sub £400 business insurance and earns me cash which is helping me kill my mortgage. When I've cleared enough of the debt I'll consider another, or whatever the performance icon of that time is as the sun could be setting on Scoobs. I'm still made welcome at Scooby meets and events, as you would be, whatever you turn up in, although it does annoy them when I overtake them in a Skoda diesel So, I'm in a similar situation to you. I really want one, but the time just isn't right for whatever reason. Patience, good things come to those who wait

What about something like a 99-00 3dr Seat Ibiza 1.9 TDi S. A bit of cash thrown at somewhere like Jabbasport and you can have a reliable, torquey, economical little hatch for £3k or maybe a bit less. The VAG diesels are a revelation if you've never driven one, and with a remap they can be astounding.

How many head gaskets have you had on the ZR

CorradoBoy is talking much sense. Spend as little on the cheaper cars, to save for the better cars.
Everyone starts at the bottom (unless they're minted). Nova SR for me.

He's also right about the VAG diesels.

100 at the wheels is pretty astounding id have said - its only 125 at the fly

4wd loses lots in the transmission . In fact the zr could well have more power to play with.

Add to that more understeer, loads more insurance ( if your going to insure it yourself - which you really should ,to build up some ncb ), 30 mpg overall
- in all honesty it maybe a step into scooby world but its more usefull as a farm vehicle or someone after v.good reliablity

if you want this ,go for it

hi alex, notice your from blackpool, me too.. if i were you i would save your money and not bother with a non-turbo impreza, they have no performance and its still four wheel drive so they arent cheap when it comes to petrol.. its up to you though. when i was 17 I had a rover metro, bag of **** but it got me from A to B and was cheap to run. Im now 24 and very glad I saved my money back then so I can afford the scoob ive got now.

we are not saying they are bad. you will have more fun tearing about in a little hatch with more power than what you would have in the scoob

plus if you do buy the sport you will only dissapointed in the power if all you want is a turbo

Less - much less. I've had a few loan Sports when my Scoob was in for a service and they just bored me to death. As many people have pointed out - you wil have loads more fun and a much cheaper time buying a hot hatch or TDi of some description.

Hi Alex,
As you are only 17 i would say you dont want a car that has too much power. Build up some no claims and driving experience first and try your best not to get any points.
I have a sport and i love it. I had a Micra as my first car and then a corsa as my second and i can honestly say i feel a lot safer driving the scoob.
I dont need top end speed and my sport has enough 'umpffh' to get me out of junctions and any tricky situations safely. My car sounds like a turbo, looks the part and does cost me a bit more to run but its worth it.
You can also visit imprezasport.net where a lot of sport owners are who can also help you with any questions.

I think the feel sloppy on the road - but i also felt the same about my Turbo. A set of springs soon fixed it
