Default Whats a Type-r like as a daily driver?

Guys,

Ive been thinking for a while of chopping the wrx in for a 2dr type-r but is it a practical and easy car to live with? Any reliability issues or things to look out for? I would love a P1 but I would be stretching myself and couldnt justify the extra cash when there is type-r's for sale between the 5.5 to 8k
region.

The other thing I would worry about is their safety, a lot of them dont seem to come equipped with passenger/driver airbags...

Any advice from type-r owners that use their cars as an everyday car would be appreciated.

Nice 1

Guy at work has one at he swears by it nice looking car his is on a 51 plate reliable (Honda), room for shopping (so he says) and fecking quick to and can be modded to 300+bhp. My wife wants one too but keep putting her off by telling to buy another pair of shoes instead but I have a funny feeling this will wear off soon

When I first got mine I used it as a daily driver and had no problems apart from fuel comsumption and resisting the urge to floor it! (although those two may be linked)

I didn't like mine for a few reasons

1) the gains in handling (lightweight & suspension) versus comfort (newage) wern't great enough

2) Being a 2 door is apain in the 4rse and i was the only one to drive it

3) Facilitys in the car were VERY Dated IMHO

4) brakes were sh1te

Mine was a V limited so had the longer 5th Gear also I Loved the DCCD

IMHO

I love mine. I have to agree though the standard brakes are ****e.

The 2 doors dont bother me as Im usually the only one in the car anyway.

My type R came with drivers airbag.

Mine has 2 air bags. It's an option I believe. Safey should be the same as any other classic Impreza.

Ride is hard, but not too much so. If you use the rear seats a lot, 2 doors are a pain! Also, the longer doors are a pain in car parks, trying to get in/out. Brakes are the same or better than similar age cars, change to better pads and it will help.

DCCD is great.
No ABS.
Looks are great
Should hold value better than 4 doors, but costs more to start with.
A bit mad on motorways with the low ratio 'box.

So, yes, it's possible to live with it every day.

Does it scream its nuts off on the motorway & I take it the revs will by high due to ratios?

I have an STi 5 type R & as with any performance car there is a compromise to be made if used as a daily driver - with a Type R, perhaps a little more so than with a wrx. The gearing's shorter so higher speed crusing can be a bit of a pain, the suspension is stiffer, so can "crash" a bit over less than smooth roads, the exhaust can drone at certain revs & mpg perhaps could be better.... If you can live with these, it's fine as a daily driver & reasonably practical as well as long as you dont regularly have back seat passengers....

It does scream it's nuts off on the motorway, but, if that's a problem then you fit a 'quiet' exhaust - half the problem solved.

Brakes: TBH, they are no better or worse than any other Impreza with the same brakes, so either fit some uprated pads, or, Brembo's fit quiet nicely (even the rears)

my revs for V4 type r is 4000rpm's = 70mph roughly from what i remember!!!

i just use mine for weekends, do to working away, and for fuel i get roughly 200miles to a full tank and thanks NOT putting my foot down!!! the ride is firm, but bearable just depends on the roads u use i suppose. comfy seats. DCCD you need to learn esp in the wet, but good fun trying!!!!lol

ive got a full H&S turbo back system in 2.5" no middle silencer, jap style backbox, and find that the noise isnt too bad on the motorway, a lot better than my blob wrx with stainless turbo back system with middle silencer, very boomy!!!

I used to use mine as a daily driver, no problems really.
Obviously uses a lot of fuel mut remap will sort that, and more power too

Thanks all for your replies. I dont want a boomy car on the m/way but I guess a change of exhausts would sort that.

It seems that most of the type-r's for sale are at that keighley trade center but I've heard their rep...

I saw a very nice looking one at car planet with full facelift inside & out but they have it up fo 10k. Thats not far off P1 money.

i have a jasma i think, its quiet, but when you floor it....ahhhh da roar.
too loud all the time would crack me up as well.
id loud ones before on other cars never again.
itd be fairly droning on a long trip.
you can get a bit that you fit to the exhaust and can change the loudness from inside the car.
dont no what there called.
