WRC.com - Live Monte Carlo Results - Let me know what you think
#1
Hi All
I'm in monte carlo at present, working on the live results interface with http://www.wrc.com
I'm so impressed with the site (run by David Richards' company ISC) and yesterday was a big success on getting the live results across as they happen (thanks to JF for his help).
Check it out throughout today, and let me know what you think. If you have some suggestions / ideas, let me know here or by email, and I would be very grateful.
There's also some good videos to download here
Latest News here
The very latest absolutely live results here
There is also a whole raft of info on all the drivers, teams, cars, rallies, etc, etc.. it's really worth a look.
There are a whole load more pictures on the site, but here's one of the best so far (not biased at all!!!)
have fun
All the best
Simon

Hiya,
Great! I thought. I'm at work but can catch up on the results, live as well! But, errrr....i think i have an over zealous **** filter because this is what i get if i try to access the WRC pages...
"Access denied by SmartFilter content category. The requested URL belongs to the following category: Sex."
Doh!

Simon I'm very sorry but
www.rally-live.com/en is still better for my money..
Sorry Dude
The WRC/ISC site is an abortion of web design *whoops* It's very clucky.. and too much flash slows ya down.. haven't tried the live radio thingy yet but some people think it's okay.
Overall.. Sorry,,, Tell David from me... NOT impressed so far and there's NO way he can charge for that coverage when other sites provide the same live stage by stage results..
But Early days yet and I'm sure that it will improve.
Sorry to be a bit of a Nay Sayer..
Richard
OH PS The really great news is Speedvision are now carrying the UK coverage on the same day
So we we don't need websites in the USA any more

Simon..
I've just gone back to the WRC website, now please do not take this the wrong way.. BUT
If the team designing that site would like some ideas/suggestions on how to really present fast moving information on what is a slow moving medium *well for a ell of a lot of people* then
eg forget the link to next page for the next group of 7 stage results.. godddamn man use a scrollbar
On a more serious note..
tell the design team to thank their lucky stars that I'm not doing their usability testing

Not at all..
Sorry If I seemed a little negative there. But In my opinion, and yes it's only my opinion.. the wrc site is overdone with lots of flash little graphic gizmos that actually do square root of sod all.. and take time to download.. Oh and yes I'm on a DSL line
Now the thing is these little graphic gizmos do not present hard core, on time results.. There are other sites that I can log onto that update their figures every 60 seconds.. The site is more Rally XS (ie the Maxpower of rallying) than the Motoring News..
I'm sorry but the whole layout of the site seems to have been designed by the followers of marie Antoinette
and before anyone suggests a connection to another website reporting the wrc.. Sorry but NO..

for example
did you know
Peugeot's Harri Rovanpera stopped in the stage because he was trying to repair a broken steering arm.
Skoda's Roman Kresta had an accident in SS7 and retired. The crew is ok.

Actually I must admit that for the live stage results I always use Worldrallynews.com, reason being that whilst their site isn't pretty with lots of interesting buttons to press it is very quick to download and the stage times are simple black on white background and you don't have to click to see more, you just simply scroll down The information is very easy to find which is good for my non-techy 62 year old dad to find, I sent him a link to the WRC site yesterday but it just confused him when he got there!
Having said all that tho' the WRC site is great for serious rally addicts to spend some time on - downloading videos, radio reports etc whilst waiting for the next stage times to come in. I think the overall design suits the new image of the WRC even if it is a bit 'busy' but I'll still go to Worldrallynews.com for the stage times!
One last thing I've not found the site slow at all but I'm on a 512K cable modem.

Oh and another thing
I know I'm a friggin pain
at 1024 x768 full screen almost 50% of the screen real estate is lost graphics that do bugger all..
Sorry Simon and John but someone really , really needs to speak with the Chief designer of that site.. for the sake of the users..
Whooops Sorry everyone to be going on about this.. But it'd be much better to get a good 1.0 version rather than a 3.0 version

If i remember rightly, the Australian rally last year had an applet that showed you where the cars were on the day, as they all had little GPS transmitters in them.

Very nice my dear.
It's a shame that piccies doesn't look as sharp as it almost certainly is (judging by where it came from). For some strange reason, whenever an image is reduced it needs sharpening to make it look as good as the original. You'd think it would be the other way round.

I spend most of yesterday looking at the site & listening to wrc.com radio.
I like it a lot, it does add a new dimension to following a WRC rally.
It is a bit tarty, but then I like tarty
That said, some buttons/lights etc are a bit too much, and indeed rob you of a lot of precious screen estate. I'm still wondering what the bottom left On/Off button does (nothing ) Also the "temp" bit could be on a seperate page, as it does not move through the day, and doesn't really add much. I suppose the area right to it will be used later on for short messages/stop press bits ?
I hear what Rich is saying about lean & mean: but nothing would prevent them to include a non flash/non flashy page with just the stage results as they happen, and only a wrc logo for example.
Usability ... agree there too, there is a problem with navigation sometimes (where did I last see that link ?) and the user interface is a bit counter intuitive in some places. Nothing that can not be fixed, but it would need some attention.
Will be interesting when the VR part will be operational as well.
I think I'll spend a lot of time there
