Default Andy F remap & mods blog! Sorry, novel!

Thought I would share my recent moding exploits and the final results which were acheived today. If you cant be assed reading it fair enough. For those who do, replies welcomed. Here goes.

Bought an 02 WRX bugeye wagon in WR blue 3rd March 2006 and set about buying parts for the PPP kit. Fitted it all in August 2007 and was very dissapointed. Had signed up to SN when I bought the car but not used it much then due to having major knee surgery and having a lot of time off work I started some SN browsing again. Came to the conclusion that the time had come to get the true potential out of the scoob and various ideas were thrown around over some strong imported rum and the odd cuban!

Decided on the following:

The aim was to have a practicle car which looks as standard as possible outside, inside and engine bay (No big scoops, body kits, FMIC or decals) and can be used as a daily driver. Performance wise the aim was to have a car that worked well on predominantly B roads, hence the mods chosen were to improve spool up and increase target boost all within safe and reliable margins. The only visable differences are the larger STI intercooler which has had the STI logo sprayed over and the PSI3 data monitor.

Mods up till this point were:

Moretti headlamp conversion
Prodrive full suspension (shocks & springs) and geometry
STI Genome front strut brace
18" Pwrc1's in silver with khumo ecsta's
Prodrive quick shift
Hayward&Scott 2nd de cat
Hayward&Scott centre pipe
Prodrive WR sport back box
AEM CAIK
PPP upgrade

Planned mods were:

GP Moto intake elbow
Simota Racing dry panel filter
Ported & wrapped OE headers
Ported & wrappeed STI up pipe
Wrapped TSL GP A de cat downpipe
Bugeye STI intercooler, splitter and interim IC spray
STi Pink injectors
255l Walbro fuel pump
NGK PFR7B plugs
Andy Forrest TD04 hybrid turbo
Andy Forrest EcuTek dual boost re map
PSI3 data monitor

The above was decided with info from Andy F and fellow scoobynetters threads, posts and advice.

Once all parts had been aquired I booked in with Andy F for Wednesday 9th January. Wrapping was done between xmas and new year by myself. On Saturday 5th I fitted the DP/UP/HEADERS and TURBO all in 4 hours. Installed the INJECTORS/FUEL PUMP/FILTER/INTAKE ELBOW/INTERCOOLER on Monday 7th all in 4 hours.

The 9th was not my day! On the way to Andy's there was steam coming from the engine bay which turned out to be a fooked seal on the header tank cap. Managed to get this sealed for the re map. Andy then spent nearly two hours trying to connect to the car but there was an issue with the software which turned out to be an Ecutek issue which was solved in 10 mins with an update. So off we went and all seemed well until panic hit when the throttle jammed open and reved its head off. Turned out it was the cable from my unplugged data monitor which got jammed between the brake and accelorator. So off we went again. Andy mapped the car for the low boost setting but when he went to try the high boost setting the car would only boost to 0.6bar. Turns out the wastegate solenoid was faulty. Andy spent nearly an hour looking for another one in his workshop but to no avail. He remembered using it on another car but thought he had got it back.

So off to subaru for a new solenoid and header tank cap. Both fitted the next day and arranged with Andy to have the mapping finished on Monday 14th.

On the way to Andy's the car developed a very bad grinding sound from the front and I thought it was all just not meant to be. Turned out to be a stone caught between the disc and back plate and wass sorted it in five minutes.

All was good from then on in! Andy mapped the car for high boost and the car felt better than I expected it to. Major grin factor when the HRS button is toggled.

On the delta dash road dyno the car made 302bhp and 310lbft torque on first run then 300bhp and 316lbft torque on the second run. Andy compare the graph to that of the same car with a larger turbo and it was way ahead up to between 5000rpm and 6000rpm which was the desired target. Spool comes in very early and it pulls like a mad man!

When we got back to Andys workshop he had a delivery. Turns out it was the spare solenoid he had spent ages looking for!
Thought this was pretty ironic.

Enough of my waffle now:

Thanks to:

Steve Scott at Scott of Dalry for ramps and help
AF Noble parts department for various parts and sundries
Welloilbeefhooked for headers and up pipe
Dunx for the IC
Andy Forrest for his patience and expertise

All the scoobynetters for info & advice!

Next!

New/uprated clutch
Uprated brake pads
Whiteline stuff

Will it ever end!

Funds a bit low so have decided to limit some of the next mods -

Fitting the following myself this week when it arrives: Whiteline 22mm rear adjustable anti roll bar with front and rear drop links. Leaving the front anti roll bar and anti lift kit for now. This should leave some cash available for the breaks which look like being one of two options:

Pagid rs421 fronts with uprated rear pads?
Ferodo DS2500 front and rear
Master cylinder stopper
Goodridge hoses

Clutch appears to be handling the power at the moment but for how long I dont know?

Cheers to Dave at Demon tweeks for the Whiteline gear!

phew - happy ending! It's funny - when we have performance cars we worry about every little noise or when it feels wrong we get paranoid. When I drive the wife's Scenic I don't give a ****

Glad the car is how you want it now m8 - some nice mods for the future too

Mark, come on mate, you loved all the drama!!!

Glad its all sorted for you mate!!

Wayne.

PS I once did the sticky open throttle thing. How long does it take the old brain the kick in switch off the ignition! Seemed like a week for me.

I have just moved to near Edinburgh.
Can you reccomend any Scooby Specialists in area to help me look after my
P1?
A visit to Andy is on the cards soon for a map to check all ok with my car on VPower.
Good post.
Sounds a good car.

From personal experience only - Hypertech in Bonnybridge are good. Very friendly and won't do unnecessary work. For servicing and warrenty though i've been the Iain Grieve in Falkirk but that's local to me and i'm sure Edinburgh peeps will have a few more recommendations.

Welcome to Edinburgh!

I use Dastek over the bridge in Dalgety bay. Good bunch there. Been using them since ownership for the STi and vRS.

Same if not slightly better. Mapping by our man Andy F leans out the fuel a bit and with improved breathing the car can do more with less. I can still get over 300 miles to the tank on a run.

Cheers for the replies. As far as servicing goes I use AF Noble Subaru once a year. Do the mods myself with the help of Steve from Scott of Dalry, who also does all my MOT's.

Allan Patterson Motorsport in Loanhead, loads of experience of fords but well knowledgable in relation to evos and scoobs.

It all worked out well in the end Dunx. Ur a top bloke who really helped me out as the funds were not going to reach the £200-£250 that people are charging for a second hand sti intercooler. Cant thank you enough!

Sounds excellent Mark. Same mods as me pretty much, apart from ported headers.

When you uprate the brakes (as per "view my scooby"), get some Pagid Blacks or Ferodo Ds2500's from Alyn at ASPerformance by mail order. Big improvement !

Not had much chance to open the car up, planted right foot today at 2500 rpm and briefly lost traction and just about S**T me self! Slippy bit of road though.

Fitting cusco master cylinder stopper, braided brake hoses and pads in the next couple of weeks. GGR vented discs up front but not decided on pagids or ferodos yet. Still have loads of life left on the fronts and rears so may wait a while. Standard rear discs and pads I think will be ok.

Next week will be whiteline stuff. Decided on 22mm adjustable rear anti roll bar, steel drop links front and rear with anti lift kit. A little over £300 deliverd from demon tweeks. Looked into perrin but the same kit was going to be £500. Still considering the 24mm bar but not sure if it would just be too much.

Need advice on where to go for 4 wheel laser alignment in the east of scotland. Not going back to subaru again.

This tuning bug should carry a bigger health warning than the Novovirus! Never had such a fever!

Dunc at hypertech in bonnybride will sort out your four wheel laser alignment or there is also progrip in bonnybridge as well. Both are used by lots of the scottish owners.
