window tinting %%%%
hey i thinking of tinting my classic subaru.. but i wana know where i can find out whats the limit to tinting.
i used to have 20% all round on the last car that i got tinted, friends say that that ain't allowed anymore....
was looking to prob tint back 3 windows... i would have 80% tint if i was sure i wouldn't get hassle all the time from police.

Motor Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985:
The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.
The front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be
transmitted through them.
You can do whatever you like to the rears.
Most traffic cars carry devices to measure the % of light transmitted, the fine is normally a £30 Ticket (No points).

And remember, the standard glass already has a tint which may block 20% of the transmitted light so the additional tint can only be very slight.

As Tony says cops will impound your car until you remove the tints on the front, happened to a mate who had my old mgzr, windows were tinted from new,not dark at all and i never had a problem, then things changed due to some lads killing a biker because they had limo tints all round and didnt see him.... upshot was coppers doing spot checks and any front tints being deemed a no no,do the rears however dark you want, leave the fronts, for your sake and other road users.

Just to confirm what I said before about getting 3 points for having to dark tints on the front, I have a link to a thread that was on SIDC back in December. There are a number of people who had recieved 3 points and a fine. This may be just in Scotland but I would be suprised as the law on the roads is the same for the UK.

Must be Scotland specific, would like to know what the offence is to warrant an Endorseable ticket.
'Glass not as prescribed' seems to be the one South of the border which is only £30 and no points.
Worse case scenario as mentioned is having a prohibition notice placed on your car and a long walk home.
Best advice is to leave anything in front of the B pillar well alone as manufacturers tinted glass is usually bang on the legal limit.

I tinted my back windows when I was 18 as I did everything in my car and welcomed the privacy
I didn't tint the front windows because I don't look like shrek and wanted to be seen driving my pride and joy.
