This is something I noticed a few weeks back when it was really cold and there being a possible presence of black ice on the roads (I doubt it)

I have a MY99 and on the dual carriageway, I floored it from 1st...2nd...3rd...4th - Now during this sprint I felt the car was drifting as if it was about to lose contact with the road (note that this was all straight line acceleration) - it felt very unstable - i suppose the best way to describle the sensation is as though the car was very light and there was a strong wind blowing left to right, which was lightly shuddering the car.

What is this? It happend a few times back then and hasn;t happend since (partially because I'm over the honeymoon period of ripping it!). In retrospect, it was quite scary...

What tyres are you running? The OEM Bridgestones are prone to this phenomenon. If it is worse in the inside lanes it is probably just tramlining in the ruts made by lorry wheels. My MY00 used to do this a lot until I changed tyres recently to Goodyear Eagle F1's

Yes, I am using the standard bridgestones - the car is completely unmodded - so this is a known phenomenon? It makes the car feel really unstable...

And this was in the outside lane...I noticed it on several roads when accelerating fast.

Jza, you are the advice king

I've just moved off the old Bridgestone RE010s onto some Toyo T1s and the difference over the stock tyre is amazing. It is no longer a wrestle to drive down a straight road with bumps in it....and that's when I'm doing my allowed top grandad speed of about 30mph

Live with it until you need to change your tyres, then you will notice a difference

Thanks for the explanation, advice king. FYI, I was holding on to the steering wheel so did manage to keep the car in the lane!

Also, I'd like to know why it was happening.

No mate, I ground them down to virtually no tread with all that slow driving that I do. I think the birds came down and picked them to pieces thinking they were giant liquorice allsorts

Should only take me about 8 years to get through the Toyos

Mine was doing exactly that, tramlining, pulling to the right, juddering when braking in a straight line....

a morning at Power Station however has put all that right... get the wheels balanced, the tracking done and the bump steer and I think you'll find it will all disappear. My alignments were way out... money well spent highly recommend it.. I am now driving a car - not a sponge...

hope that's helpful
P
PS also go on the rolling road mine got 270 bhp (sorry for repeating myself but I'm still in awe)

Pen,

How much did all that wheel balancing and bump steer removal set you back? And would that give me 270bhp as well?

Cheers

ps - Have power station got a website/tel no? Where are they based?

Agree that the probable cause is the OEM Tyres [RE010 Potenzas?]. This is my second scoob and the second time with the same sort of problem. Also have this crab like sideways action on full throttle 1st / 2nd gear acceleration in the wet. Very unnerving.

Waiting for them to wear a little more on this car, so I can get some Toyos fitted withour 'er indoors remarking on the unnecessary expenditure. Gotta go, think she wants the trousers back . .

Forgot to mention that it tramlines like a number 6 to Zurich zoo on worn tarmac.
