Hey,

I've just been told by my local garage that my car is now officially dead! Apparently, a bearing came loose and went through the cam and into the 1st cylinder. Not sure what this means, but by all accounts it's f**ked. My STI is a 2005 with 56,000 miles on it and in excellent condition, with a very good maintenance record. They told me it'll cost me 6k to fit a used engine which I can't afford. I still owe approx 26k on it.

Any idea where Subaru and the warranty will stand on this? The car was pretty much stock other than an exhaust, K&N Typhoon and an APS BOV.

It's a daily driver for me and I'm devastated that the car of my dreams can just die on you like that, especially when you owe so much still!

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I stand or what I can do to make this a less painful experience?

What date did yoiu buy the car? sometimes if it's slightly out of warranty the manuf will pay some money towards the repair, if not speak to David @ API

Well your first mode of recourse is the warrenty you need to talk to the subaru garage you got it from ideally, especially if you have had them do you services etc, they will take it from there i would imagine.

Although with 56k on the clock and posibly only 3 years old it is above average miles.

Not ever having this happen to me I can only summise the best route I would take.

If its a 55plate it should still be under warranty i'd take the aftermark parts of and get back to the dealer andhave them replace the engine under warranty.

Sorry to hear about your car. How come you are owing £26k on it still? Did you buy it brand new? If so, you've done a lot of mileage for a 2/3 year old car?

My view on this is when did you have the car last serviced? Check what they did at this service? Generally garages are quite good at picking things up before it goes pop!

From my understanding the warranty becomes invalid as soon as you modify the car i.e. remove any factory parts and replace this with a non-factory part. Take these off and replace them with the old ones and see if your dealer can put through a warranty claim.

See what others views on this are and then decide what is best course of action.

I've actually only had the car for a little over a year. I'm living in the States (North Carolina) and persuaded my wife to trade her 2 door Mustang Sof Top in for the Subaru. Ford's don't hold their value for s**t over here so it seemed the best thing to do in terms of what the Mustang was worth and what was owed on her initial loan.

For her allowing me to do it, I told her I'd take the negative equity onto the initial loan for the Subaru which bumped everything up to $36k. (bearing in mind we're in $ and not GBP). I figured it would be an investment because Subaru's have such a good reputation for reliablity, safety etc.

I coach footy (soccer) and so I do a shed load of driving back and forth to games, practices and stuff. I bought the STI for $27k with 18,000 miles on it. So i've done around 38k miles in a 14 months. But I knew the Subaru could take the driving and after it was paid off in 6 yrs ($600 a month) I'd still have a decent car to drive.

Last time it was in for a service, they just did the regular checks, oil etc. No problems with it. I drive the car hard from time to time but not nearly often as most with a car like this. I just can't belive this has happened.

I'll take the BOV off this afternoon and fit the stock one back on, along with the air intake. The exhaust system was already on it when I bought it back in October 2006 so there's nothing I can do about that. Shouldn't make too much of a difference though I'd have thought.

Alright, the stock BOV and Air Intake is fitted back into the corpse now. By the way, what a pain in the **** it is to re-fit the BOV! The clamp that holds the tube to the BOV is real tight and there's not much room to play around, took forever!

It's getting towed up to the Subaru dealership in the morning (9am EST or 2pm your time. They'll keep for however long and take it apart. Hopefully, fingers crossed everything will fall nicely into place for them to replace the block.

Ametrican fuel is of a similar standard to ours, its just measured using a different method.

whats that in relation to the 100ron fuel used in japan or the 99ron fuel over here like v-power ot tesco 99??

if the difference is sizeable and the car wasnt mapped... think others may agree that this may be a cause

i dowt it'l be the fuel as subaru will have the cars ecu set up for the fuel of the country its intended for.

more likely the oil depending on how often serviced as he's done the equivelant of 3 times the service intervals as it should be serviced every 12000miles at least and he's done 38000miles in 14months so if the oil hasn't been changed it will have been running high temps and knackered the bearing that would be my guess

As somebody else pointed out - was it remapped for yr fuel (including the other mods) AND I would recommend changing the oil every 6k miles. If you do it yrself between garage services it wont be expensive at all and its dead easy.

Dont worry about the official Subaru dealership engine price. Go find a good Scooby specialist and get something nicer put in for the same money or less. I'd recommend the Cosworth fettled engine - thats what I'll be going for next

Might also be worth getting some gauges - might stop this happening again if u spot the signs. I'm still surprised that Subaru sell our cars without oil pressure and boost gauges as a minimum.

Blimey,

1) look into the warranty situation: it should be covered for 3 years by Subaru, but you have modified it, so they might refuse to honour it.

2) Not sure ehat the current conversion rate is but $6k sound like a lot to fit a second hand engine, and if you're spending that kind of money then a rebuild would be a much better option. Shop around!

3) I would speak to David at Api on here for advice!

No, I meant it'd be worth him having a chat with David for advice on his options (I know he's unlikely to want to get a rebuild done there being as he is in the USA! ) David is a top bloke and will happily tell him the kind of deal he should be looking for even if APi won't be doing the rebuild/supplying the new engine.

$6k seems blooming steep for a 2nd hand engine, and he'll want to make sure it is a genuine STi one/ or advice or good rebuild options etc... The poster sounds a bit lost! He should speak to someone knowledgable and a bit more impartial than a st(d)ealer!
