Yeah, loads about .... maybe not up your road - but lots out there.
It will be a challenge to find one that has not been messed about with and low mileage ......... why a low mileage anyway?

id gladly travel oop north or darn sarf for the right car. on the other hand i could also understand the dude above, as theres that many buckets being passed off as mint condition, it could be seen as a huge waste of petrol and/or time.

Well, I beg to differ with TSL. I know what knackered big-ends sound like. Went through that experience with my sti 3.
If it was the big ends, it would be there all the time, not just when cold.

Agree with the sentiments. Seems when it comes to cars in general many people seem to have much lower stanadrds when evaluating thier car's condition or see their car with rose tinted glases and spout how immaculate it is and its "mint" etc. When in reality, its at best very average, tired, or a worn out dog.
Either that, or the seller happily lies through their back teeth in hope that person buying is both ignorant AND blind
Nothing worse than wasting £50 of petrol and the best part of a day to see tatty old shed. I lost count the amount of times this happened to me.
Funnily, when I'd dragged by **** over half the country looking at misdescribed cars and given up hope, the perfect Impreza turned up barely 5minutes drive down the road!
Sod's law eh?

Not always; they only knock when they have failed completely or totally worn out.
Worn bearings can be perfectly quiet and so no audible sign of any problem or impending doom.
If one is lucky one "may" get a faint knock if putting the engine (whilst hot) under some slight load in gear at idle by using the clutch with the foot on the brakes. Or noticing oil pressure is somewhat on the low side and doesn't improve with rpm, indicating oil loss through excess bearing clearaces or a relief valve/pump problem.
Its why these engines (not just Subaru, I may add) are so good at "suddenly" having a completely failed big end without impending warning. Because the prior symptoms are so easy to overlook....until it rears its ugly head when the engine is given some hard use. Often noted soon after buying the car and testing its performance. Sad, but true
