Oil level
#2
Flat and level surface, stop the engine and leave it for 5 mins for the oil to drain back to the sump. Cold is also fine. Should be about half way up the dipstick, don't fill it to max.

Best advice for me as i find it a bloody pain to read:- Remove dipstick and wait for 5 mins for the oil to drain back down. Then check it a few times.
I find this better than just trying to read the level straight away.

My scooby is a bloody nightmare to get an accurate dipstick level. Totally different one day to the next even from cold. One day it can look half empty and then next day full to brim. A week or so ago it looked just over the first dot when checked over a couple of days so I put quarter of a litre in just to be on the safe side and bring the level into the middle. Checked it today from cold and its now showing just over the second dot. Go figure! And yes I do wipe my dipstick!

Depends on how much you've drained..!
To err on the safe side, with a pre-filled filter, put in JUST over 4 ltrs, allow to settle 5 mins then check, adding ~200 mls until it's about half way between H-L HOLES.
Then start (turning over with crank sensor disconnected beforehand, if that's what you do..) run for 30 seconds, switch off. Pull dipstick, wipe and leave out 6" or so, leave for 10 mins then recheck.
Your looking for an accurate reading of half way when cold, so if needed add 100mls a time until this is achieved..!
Finally run until properly warm, allow to settle, again with dipstick out, and re-check. This time it should be at the top hole as oil expands when hot..
It's also a good idea to check from cold the next day (same dipstick out for 10 mins) for a half way measure.
Sounds a bit ****, but it isn't really as these cars are very sensitive to oil level and they can be a PITA to read properly..

I check mine every morning cold before going to work. I like to be on top of things.
I agree though, the damn dipstick never reads the same from one pull to the next.
