Default Oil change advice - quick reply needed please!

Hi, changed my oil last night and completely forgot to fill the filter before fitting!

As I'm doing some other work on it and it's still in bits I haven't started the car yet.

My question is would the filter be full anyway by the time I am ready to start it as it's been sat for 16 hours now, or should I really drain it and start again?

Obviously I have disconnected the crank sensor and will be turning it over until the light goes out before starting.

Any thoughts?

Cheers Brad

others may disagree

You really only need to fill the filter, if you plan to start the car as soon as you've filled the car up with oil.

The theory goes, that while the filter is taking time to fill up you'll be turnning the engine over with no oil in the system. Considering how much oil is pumped around and how quickly it gets pumped around I don't think its anything to worry about. It can't be that much of a gap.

As you've left the car standing for a time, the oil would have filled the filter anyway, I really wouldn't worry about it.

As you say make sure you turn over with the crank sensor off to build up oil presurre first. Thats the most important thing!!!!!!

Disconnecting the crank sensor allows the engine to turn over without firing.

In so doing the engine will build up oil pressure. So when you actually start the car for the first time the oil pressure will be there ready and waiting.

You're basically a lot less likely to cause engine and turbo damage as a result.

in my opinion you are more likley to cause damage trying to build the pressure up by just cranking the engine without the crank/cam sensor connected, next you do an oil change just make sure that fill the oil filter first this is only precaution you need to take.

Err - why not just remove the filter and fill it?? If you haven't started the engine, there will be no oil in there!
I find it amazing that garages may not pre-fill the filter, do it while the old oil is draining, overall time taken remains the same! No brainer? Got a feeling it's simple ignorance on the part of many mechanics, as to what really goes on in an engine! I have a morbid distrust of any garage, as you may have gathered!

Crank Sensor Removal IMO is for those who are scared of the dark and don't walk on the cracks in the pavement ...... utterly, utterly pointless.

More damage is done churning the engine over .....

Just start the thing and just remember to pre-fill the filter next time ......

The Main Dealers do NOT pre-fill the filter or engage in any of the other **** claptrap bollox ................
