Default Is this the standard spec of a Type R??

Just been looking at the 'Type R corner' thread in the gallery section and noticed that someone posted the 'standard spec' of a type R, I know some of the things listed are obviously from the limited edition models, but I was most suprised to see a mention of forged pistons and reinforced crank?! Is that standard?

(This has been copied and pasted from that particular thread-)

standard spec:

STi Blue Printed Engine
STi Group N Low Ratio Gearbox
STi ECU
STI Stainless Exhaust (Sodium Filled)
STi Inverted mono-tube strut suspension.
STi Aluminium lower suspension arms
STi Carbon front strut brace
STi Carbon rear strut brace
STi Anti roll bar
STi Intercooler & inlet manifold
STi Forged molybdenum pistons
STi Quick shift
STi quickrack 13:1 steering
STi Competition clutch
STi Large-size engine under tray
Reinforced Steel Crankshaft
Front viscous diff
Reinforced mechanical rear diff
DCCD (Electro-magnetic driver controlled center differential)
4-Pot front brake callipers
Rear twin opposed piston brake caliper
Front & Rear Vented Discs
Inter cooler water spray
Uprated Engine Mounts
Braided Wiring
Aluminium bonnet and boot
Rally style roof vent

STi High Level Rear Spoiler
STi Fog Light Blanking Covers
STi Front Spoiler

Anyone confirm this?

The above car is a wrc limited edition type r so will differ in spec to other models/manufacter years etc.....

And the aluminium boot is incorrect........

Oh o.k, what about the 2 bits that I was most intrigued about? the forged pistons and reinforced crank? - does anyone know if that applies to the sti type r's?

Same engine in the STi's across the range, though the forged pistons are not what you would class as "real" forged ones, and the crank aint as strong as the latest STi models.

Cheers for that Tony, which leads me onto my next question.......

What sort of power can the standard internals take reliably? I'm not looking into massive power, I just want to do the usual full exhaust system (inc manifold) new intercooler (think I'm gonna stick with a top mount) remap and slight boost hike, so with those mods I would hope to achieve around 340-350 brake possibly? with a close torque figure?

Thats a realistic aim its the torque that you have to watch, the gearboxes are slightly stronger than the none STi cars but no where near as strong as the 6 speed boxes, but there are quite a few people on here running that sort of power with no problems, just a bit of tlc and not too agressive with the starts
Also if its a v5 or v6 its going to be easier to map as you can use the standard ecu

Ah, thats annoying, mines a v4...

So what choices do I have for mapping then?

Cheers for the pointers Tony, I'm learning about Scooby's quite fast actually! Been a member on here for a week or two and have already learnt loads thanks to members like yourself!

Apexi did an ecu which wasnt too expensive, you may be able to pick a second hand one up, not sure if they still make them but there are a few other aftermarket ecu's out there, unfortunately im not up to gen on those as the last 2 scoobs ive owned didnt need the ecu changing
Have a look at somewhere like zen performance who does aftermarket ecu's

O.k mate, thanks for that, thought I'd ask just incase you knew, but I will certainly phone a few specialist companies to see what they can suggest.

Thanks again mate.

Can recommend Zen......i have the Autronics ecu fitted/mapped by Paul with anti lag and it is awsome compared to the ecutek i had previous...................

An Apexi ecu is a popular choice for models before the v5/6 models i believe.

Even a UK impreza can run 400bhp reliably, my RB5 did for about 10k miles including some 1/4 mile and track time without a faulter. IMO it's revs/bad fuel/ignorance that kills these cars.

My gearbox lasted, though i've heard of a lot that didn't. I sold my car with an unbuilt ppg kit as I was expecting a failure.

Oh, and the STi does have forged pistons, just maybe not the best quality forged you could buy

Consider that the latest pistons in STi's (JDM 2ltr) are acutally cast and stronger than the "forged" pistons in the classic STi's.
There is a difference between the types of forging and materials used, ie drop forged.
Its the quality of the piston that matters, not how its made.

Obviously in time manufacturing processes change and new better ways are discovered.

Its a bit scary what they will actually be able to do in less than 10 years time but as you say, its the better processes
