Default Newbie seeks advice WRX OR STI?

Hi i currently drive a boring diesel C4. Finally decided that i dont care how much running costs are im getting a petrol.

So i test drove a 2005 305bhp PPP STI. Was very impressed. Going to test drive an EVO on thursday night. But from what i hear the impreza is more reliable and long service intervals and slightly better fuel economy.

So im just wondering if anyone on the forum could tell me any plus points about the impreza over an evo. And what model would be recommended?

Wondering wether or not its worth going for the STI or just the WRX?

If i go for the impreza would it be worth going for the STI model?

If so what are the main differences with it?

The STi is a more focused car. The WRX is a good car but the STi is better generally.

Better turbo, better gearbox (6 speed) better trim, better suspension (or its supposed to be if they sorted the knocing struts out) better engine.

What do you want out of the car?

Are you going to tune it or just drive it?

Do you rev a car hard or normally use the torque?

The WRX drive nicer than the STi but the STi is a quicker car.

Thats my opinion on the job

its also worth noting as well, that on 2005 onwards cars, the STI gets the DCCD the driver controller centre differential

the WRX doesnt and is just a 50:50 split 4 wheel driver system. the STI is variable, putting more torque to the wheels that have tractions.

but in short, main differences

5 gears vs 6 for the STI
crude 4wd vs DCCD for the STI
more hp on the STI
uprated suspension on the STI.

Well i drive a Diesel so the power increase is going to be over the moon for what ever model i go for.

I will most likely do the usual mods, Exhaust, remap, dump valve, possibly anti lag, doubt ill touch turbo etc as thats big bucks.

Looking for a nice note out of the car. Im looking to spend about 12k. I dont like the bug eye model so that means im looking around an 03 impreza.

Can anyone tell me why they went for the scoob over the evo?

I know my questions are all over the place but im just trying to get some answers to see which is best for me

A well modded WRX is a great car to own (i had one), but economically as a starting point, a second hand STi is better and has more potential for the money. Bang for buck is what these cars are all about and there are some great STis to be had in your price range. Whats 'better' is down to individual taste, but the 'package' you get in the standard STi will save you time and money when buying and modifying a second hand scoob. EVO's are great but comand more money from the outset, or buy a much older model.

No, blobeye facelift/specials and earlier JDM's too, although the ratios changed between blob and hawkeye.

Check out 'my scooby' has modded WRX and STi Specs for comparison.

I do like my hawkeye WRX and am happy with it but if I had known more about subarus before this I would have gone for a classic sti4 or RA due to the fact that these have more power and are easier to upgrade

I seen both your scoobs. Very nice. Like the new face light model (hawkeye) best but your black blob eye with carbon spoiler is very nice indeed. Just need to find the car now

1. Scary service intervals on the Evo.
2. Impossible to have a relaxed drive (everyone needs to sometimes) in the Evo.
4. Scoobs seem more characterful.

Just my opinions.

If you can, get a drive in a PPP'd WRX. I have a late '05 and love it. The 0-60 is better than a standard Sti and so is the mid range performance (which can take people by surprise as an '03 Sti found out on Monday! ).

It depends what you want really, the Sti is a more demanding drive and possibly more satisfying because of that and I suppose if you're going to 'mod' it then it's a better platform to start with.

Drive all 4 variants (WRX, WRX PPP, STi & STi PPP) before you take the plunge, but whichever you choose, you'll be grinning from ear to ear everytime you drive it!

Mike.

Sounds great.

Just looking at some specs.....

The STI doesnt seem much faster but it does seem to have better handling etc

Ill test drive a wrx too insurance would be slightly cheaper too

I never drove an STI before buying but i'd heard they were less comfortable to use every day (mine still has to get me to work everyday!).

Drove a standard newage WRX and WRX PPP - the PPP really impressed me and left the standard WRX in the shade. Much better torque through the whole rev range and it sounds mint too

imports have it i believe from 2003 onwards

they are on the blobeye revision cars (2005-2006) in the UK onwards though. You can tell the difference as the revised 2005 car has DCCD, multispoke (not the 5 spoke) alloys, and a much better interior and the gauges are the same as the JDM ones too.

Only people with WRXs claim they are better than STIs... naturally I suppose. The fact is the WRX STI is the range topping model and is a better performance car as standard than the WRX. Both can be modded to similar levels but the STI will get there cheaper as it is a better platform to start from. This is why we pay more for an STI.

A WRX is better if you want comfort over performance, but then ask yourself why you don't buy something like a 5 series, Mondeo, Vectra or a Mazda 6 if this is your goal. Only buy a WRX if you:

a) like scoobs but can't afford an STI
b) like scoobs and want a comfortable drive
c) want a comfortable modded car that goes like stink.

My opinion anyway.

I'd get the Evo. Faster, better handling, more reliable and not so chavvy

Or you could go bling, like the style guru who just gave you a sweeping statement, and get a car with ridiculous silver wing mirrors... cool

Indeed as your comments are unwelcome in a thread where someone is asking for advice. What is the point in trolling? Sad really.

The Evo is better in many respects but give the OP some sensible advice why.

I wasn't trolling. I've had 3 Stis (cars ), 1 Wrx and IMO the Evo was the better car.

I'll elaborate. The FQ330 is a far quicker car than even a PPP Sti. With the SAYC it is sublime in terms of handling, even a novice can drive it quickly. The Evo is rarer, and as a result hasn't attracted the sticker up, blacked out windows, bolt on halfords bodykit element.....yet.

My advice, dismiss it if you wish, but trolling......
