Default WHICH OIL

Morning all,

Excuse me for what may be my stupidity but which engine oil should I be using?

I have an 06 STI UK with Prodrive upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

As it's a MY06 I'm guessing you are just looking to top up, in which case stick with whats in there (I think the dealers use Shell helix of some type, call and ask them).

If you're doing a complete oil change then as above speak to oilman:

Another one to the sword ......... LOOK IN THE HANDBOOK!!

OR speak to Subaru - they don't sell oil so have no need to oversell you expensive stuff because thats where the fattest profits are for sellers of oil.

I can't resist, can I??

Its a tough one but for standard cars I would be inclined to go with the manufacturer. After all they are the ones who have to fix it if the oil is rubbish and breaks the engine. So with their warranty claims in the balance, surely its in their interest not to recommend something sub standard.

However thats not to say there are not better options out there. But it also does not mean their standard recommendation is rubbish.

Well said Snazy ............. but, no-one has yet come up with a definition of the word 'better' when applied to the logic of expensive oil versus oil that Subaru recommend.

If the oil is changed every 6 months I simply cannot see any benefit whatsoever with the expensive oils ..... if the oil is left in the engine for 2 years then I could see the logic for buying the expensive oil for its extended life properties.

It boils down to a 'feeling' ..... if you 'feel' happier paying £40 for 5 litres then there we are - do it. Personally, I like paying £12:99 for what Subaru recommend

It currently has 10w/50.

I presume this is fully synthetic as the oil change was done at TSL when I had some work done

Phone TSL and ask them what they used. I'd guess its Silkoline fully synth 10W/50

My Spec D with PPP has recently had it's 10k service and they used Castrol 10W-60 fully synthetic having given me the option to go for semi or fully synthetic.

I'm not too sure why they chose 10W-60 as this option is not in the manual. A response from Oilman suggests this is not an ideal choice so not sure about the next change.

See the following for Oilman's response https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...ml#post7244341

The Castrol 10-60 stuff is not a proper fully syn. So many different opinions on many sites about oil. Either speak to Alyn @ AS Performance or Oilman to see what they suggest for your car/budget.

10W-60????????

Good god that must be like treacle

Good for a 300,000mile 20 year old Sierra I would imagine - not so good for a Japanese Sewing Machine Engine ..... unless under extreme conditions in the desert!

This is what I am currently using in my vehicles:-

The Oil Man - Fuchs Titan XTR 10w/40 Oil 5 litres (Powered by CubeCart)

You will see that The Oilman wants to take £23:99 off you - I buy it for £12:99!!

Quoting The Oilman:- "TITAN XTR 10W/40 offers outstanding performance and durability in today’s high performance engines, both naturally aspirated and turbocharged"

If you drive normally and service your car regularly you will never have to buy your own oil unless your car has a problem. I have only been driving 16 years so my experience is limited, but in my experience this is the case.

I'm not sure what you are saying - is it that if it's Serviced by someone else, you don't have to worry about what is put in?

Oilman is ALWAYS having an end of season sale!!!!

It's a marketing ploy - good luck to him ---- anyone who can find buyers for an Oil at £24 which I can buy RETAIL at £13 deserves riches beyond their wildest dreams ....................... just I'm not your average joe
