Hi Guys, I'm new here, so please be gentle

I'm looking at buying a '95 Legacy GT twin turbo and was wondering if there was anyone here who knew much about them, as info on the web is pretty sparse.

I've test driven it and like it a lot, no clunks from the auto box, kicks down OK, no noise from the 4WD system, engine sounds well fit on the Japanese big-bore back box

I just wanted know if there are any gotchas to look out for, and if anyone knows where to get performance parts for this model (i.e. an induction kit to compliment the exhaust)

Cheers,

Rev

Hi,

i had a 95 GT. Don't bother modding it just get a manual - I had both and the manual is 100 times better. The auto box sucks a lot of power.

I had no probs with mine except fuel economy 23-24 mpg for a car that wasn't all that quick (0-60 is about 7.5 in auto which I think for 260bhp is a bit slow).

Great handleing though, very light steering and it felt like sitting up ina cab but still very nice to drive.

I sold mine about a year ago for £7500, how much are they these days??

Thanks for the reply. I want an auto due to the useage I'll be giving it, plus it's cheap (5k with only 30k on the clock and totally unmarked, yummy). I just need to sell my Lexus IS200 and I'm set

Matt

Apart from the performance increase was the economy any better on the Manual.

What sort of performance did you get out of the manual

I have an auto and the box is playing up so I am looking at converting it to manual

Paul,

The economy is better on the manuals. No question.

it is fairly involved though, can mean changing the drive shaft among other things.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Thanks

Sounds like it will be the way to go - I would have bought a manual originally if I could have found one but they all seemed to be autos in my price range 2 1/2 years ago.

I think the transfer case (maybe the wrong terminology) is packing up on my - I get a lot of binding on tight turns, and this is making my economy even worse (17mpg and I did 35,000 miles last year) Makes the handling fun though with what amounts to a very tight LSD in the centre.

Its the smoothest, most responsive autobox I've ever driven and I've had some pretty good cars.

strange though isn't it one person thinks it's a great box another useless.

I may have been a bit harsh as it was sandwiched between a tiptronic FTO and a V8 Lexus!

Tiptronic gives you little bit extra and the V8 well astonishing!

The tiptro B4 is pretty nice, but it is slower than the manual - more than the different ECUs would suggest. The thirst bit is common across the board I think - more welly for the start off = more fuel used, but I bet my manual is competitive in fuel usage the way I drive mine (on the track only, natch ).

Still, it is one of the better auto boxes I have tried, and I love the way it holds the gear instead of shifting up when it hits a predetermined point a la a certain german brand's version (not good when driving along a mountain road with cliffs etc and it won't hold 2nd going into a sharpish bend ).

Paul, I think you will need the drive shaft - the length of the boxes is different, and the diffs (depending on era I am told - not done it myself) may need to be matched.

Cheers and good luck

Thanks

I know of a wrecked manual GTB, the same age as mine so I can get all the parts from this, the gearbox casing has cracked but I hope to swap it with a Impreza box.

I assume i need the following

Box
Brackets
Flywheel/Clutch
Pedal Box
Front and rear diff
ECU
Pedal Box and clutch bits
(poosibly instrument panel ?)
Possibly front driveshafts
Forgot about the propshaft!!

Anything else

Paul

I found the manual gave about another 4mpg (20%) or so, I think mainly from the fact you didn't need to give it so much to get it going!

Performance seemed like a different car altogether, I always do a few timed runs and knocked over a second off the 0-60 and 3 seconds off the 0-100. A big difference I found was in the gear changes, if you floor the auto it's quick but the final change at about 115-120 takes a good few seconds, this is when I got overtaken by my mates WRX it was though I just stopped when he passed me. I thought the car was still limited it was that much of a delay, after that though it accelerated away. I also got wasted by a 2.0 Toyota Avensis!! That's when I changed for the manual.
