Got my new WRX on the road today. First trip cruising around local roads that I know well. OK I'm running at no more than 4000rpm but there seems to be very little go. Nearly got side swiped on a roundabout as the take up was so lethargic.
I expected at 4000rpm to get approx. 160bhp. Car is heavier than my 205GTi so would expect similar acceleration even while running in.
Am I missing something? (Torque?)
On the upside i got my first wave on my first outing

It's the four-up that made it slow. I noticed a huge difference with my WRX between driving alone and having a full car.
With four in the car I had trouble keeping up with a Clio Sport and got massive brake fade!

Thanks for the comments guys. Don't know if i feel better or not. I've spent the money so will have to hang in there.
NL 14 miles
Will a tight engine show less bhp at xx revs, or will it just take longer to get to those revs?

Clear some room on your credit card and get your order in for the PPP... Takes forever to come but is well worth it... makes the car what you thought it would be in the first place!
I ordered mine at 9000 miles and had it fitted at 17500 (three month wait!) but can happily say that it is a great upgrade and makes a huge difference.
Go on, you know you want to...

Speedking,i know cash is probably tight at the moment but get Nick Adams back box if you can,and add an ITG filter, the filter in particular made mine run so much better.I know its hard but drive nicely for 1000 miles and then reap the rewards afterwards.
A friend bought his MY01 as an ex demonstrator and he has sh*t mpg all down (according to Subaru) to it not being run in correctly.

I got 172hp @ the wheels in my 01, if i stick 4 people in it, it will still go like a slug, kick out the 4 and wahoo
If i want the best peformance out of my car i drive it hard as i can, the car will handle it (mines has for 50k klm's), if i dont drive it hard then its pretty ordinary.
Cheers

speedking - get some more miles on it, funnily it seems to suddenly feel like it has had an engine change atabout 4000miles. But I think you'll be looking at a decat or PPP very soon. 4 up and hot day, very bad news in terms of go.

I had a 10,000 mile WRX for the day when my MY99 wagon was having its 30k service. And the new shape felt very much like the Legacy I'd had on the previous service rather than an Impreza - it's much quieter than the old one, which masks the speed. It's also much heavier than the old one, which makes it slower.
Plus any turbocharged car with a bit of weight and that high inertia drivetrain is going to feel lethargic from a standstill unless you give it some revs. Add in the tight engine and hot weather and it's no surprise that it didn't impress. It'll be more fun on a cool October evening when run in, I'm sure.

Give it time. Our WRX has done 5500 miles now. Just driven it home, and it is starting to go like stink on boost. Still a bit laggy though.
Also own a 205GTi (a 1.9) like you. Can assure you that, while the Scooby is no-where near as responsive to the throttle, it is ultimately far quicker.

Dispense with your lardy passengers and keep the revs up - it's the only way to really push on.
I don't find that the heat makes that much difference, driving down the Foss Way yesterday was tremendous fun, double de-clutch into 3rd and you're past the Sunday drivers in no time.
The longer I have my MY01 (8k miles now) the more fun I have in it. You have to keep the revs up to get the most out of it, but now that the engine is nicely loosened up the oomph is more noticeable. Care taken while running in does reap its rewards later on.
Oh, and always use Optimax fuel - I'm firmly convinced it is a major contribution to a better-running car.
Mildo.

Pick up my WRX MY02 on Friday so will let you know. It is blue/black mica with Prodrive twin headlamps - The only mod you need. I dont care if it isnt quite as quick as the older MY90's models - IT CERTAINLY WINS IN THE LOOKS AND STYLE DEPARTMENT and makes the older shape look extremely dated!! :P

Have recently been converted myself picking up a MY01 PPP last saturday.
I can't really tell whether its as quick as my old MY96 (fully decatted) or not. Sometimes it certainly doesn't feel as quick but when I look at the Speedo I'm doing naughty speeds. The power delivery is a lot smoother (almost like a N/A tuned car), not quite the kick in the back you got from the old model when you hit the boost which is why it seems deceptive.
Had a few "races/tussle/etc" with a MY01/02 when I had my classic and in a straight line I couldn't put any distance between us at all (don't know if they had any mods or not).
Prodrive or Morrette headlight conversion is a must also in my opinion, wouldn't have bought one without it, now just go to save for the UK300 rear spoiler

Two cars with the same power/gearing and one is 150kgs heavier. The heavier car will be slower simple physics really. If you modify the heavier one then it can catch up but if you are playing on the same field then a 215bhp WRX will bw slower than a 215bhp MY00 and a 280bhp WRX will be slower than a 280bhp MY00.

Done 20K in the MY01.
Have SS 3/4 system and ITG filter. Run on optimax also.
Mine really started to go for it after 6K, then the ITG was fitted around 13K and this took out the flat spots. You must take it steady when running in though. I did so until about 4K then started to open it up progresively.
I can get 30-32mpg on motorway and get good performace when I want to have some fun.
Very flexible motor, which is what I need.

Chris, did u go for the Morette or Prodrive headlamp conversion? I got the dealership to put on the Prodrive ones and I was NOT happy with the way it looked. I managed to convince them to swap for the morettes which look so much better. The problem with the prodrives is that on its own i.e without UK300 spoiler etc. it looks out of place whereas the headlamp conversion was the only mod I am going to do on my MY02. The moreettes flow with the cars lines more and doesnt look out of place. phew............

My 01 WRX was slow, didnt like it. If I had been driving a 2litre Mondeo before, I would probably have loved it. But coming out of a 97 model Catalunya, the WRX was pants in the performance dept. Nicer on long journeys though.
I wouldnt have one again.
Have an Sti 7 now with full decat/dawes/etc, its a beast.

Tigs, thats the reason i moved to a 300 bhp/tone westfield, soon to add nos that will take it to insane 400 bho/tone way way more fun but i would have another scoob at the drop of a hat for a normal road car
