P1 or Newage STI - Talk to me
What should I buy with £10K.
P1
+ve:-
I Could do with 4 doors but my daughter is 6 so not to big a deal to jump in the back.
Very pretty.
Are and will always be quite a sort after car.
Classic Impreza ownership should be cheaper (barring oily bit failure)
Exclusivity
-Ve:-
Likelyhood of engine failure
At least 7 years old
Only 2 doors
Is it really that much different to my UK classic that cosmetically was about as close as a 4 door can get to a P1 (Sonic Blue, P1 rear and front spoilers)
Prodrive Newage STI in Black (Bug)
+Ve
More car for the money
4 doors
Quite rare
Not as old as P1
-Ve
Bit ugly
More expensive to run than a P1
Cant comment on drive of a newage because I haven't driven one.
Heart says P1, Heads says Newage (actually head says diesel family estate )
£10K can get me under 50K miles, low former keepers, unabused examples (don't want uber modded cars)

you summed it up there really - all the opinions you get will be P1 owners 'get a P1' and newage owners 'get the newage'
I love P1's and type R's and had the same decision to make before I bought my newage but ended up going for the newer car - interior on P1's and Type R's is the only thing I didn't like

Going to have a look at a P1 on Saturday. Its 57K which is higher than I wanted and 3 owners and I'd ideally like first or at most 2nd owner. Looks ok and for £9K isn't a bad price.
However, I think a newage would be better VFM and less likely to go POP on me. I don't want a blob unless its got DCCD and other than import which I want to avoid its 54 plate onwards and another £5K.
Doesn't seem to hard to find low mileage Prodrive Bugeyes in black - its harder to find ones with PPP though.

A rebuild for a P1 would be in the region of £2.5-3k. It's about the only weak point of the cars. Pretty much not much else goes wrong with them. To put things into perspective, my mate just serviced his 996 and it cost him £3k for 'bits and pieces' that needed replacing
As above, factor in a rebuild or get one with a recent rebuild. You'll have a damn fine looking car with the pace to match and it will be VERY reliable. I'd imagine the newer shape would cost a bit more, have a reliable engine and be more pratical with kids etc. Given that I'd still have the P1.

I had the same decision to make 18 months ago and ended up with the Newage. I do constanty ask myself wether I should have gone for the P1 though. Awesome cars alround.

I had a newage Wrx PPP and traded it in for a P1 4 months ago. Best decision I ever made. I was worried about going to an older car but it is just a joy to drive. Mine had just got its engine done prior to buying it and has FSSH

Go with the new age better build quality, better engine, bigger intercooler, better clutch/gearbox/brakes (unless the P1 you find has the alcon upgrade), cheaper to run (only 1 service v 2 on the P1 per year) and not that much difference in fuel costs
Reasons for buying:- more practical, 4 doors and a bigger boot also safer than the P1, though if you look around, you can pick up a decent 03/04 JDM import for 14k now which are even better

I went newage now thinking of a p1
newage sti is a better all round car and dosn't look dated as th p1's are starting to.
But p1's have "that something" that makes them a classic with more street cred.

I dont think the P1 looks dated, but think the newage is pretty fat and ugly.

I'm no new age hater, i like them a lot. As said above safer, more reliable, (a little) bit better put together. etc...
I owned a P1 for 3 years until it recently got stolen and driven many hi spec new age cars - spec C's, WR1, JDM Sti's etc and as to which is best for you then you need to look at your preferences.
If you are after a fun car, one that makes you wan't to take the long way to work everyday then the P1 is the one. All the other's mentioned above are just not as involving to drive as a P1/Type R, even though things like the Spec C's are ultimately more capable.
If you preferences are for less fun, but a bit more of an all round user experience then go for a New age.

Not sure how you can say that a P1 is more involving to drive than say a Spec C, the latest jap spec cars are quite demanding sometimes, the P1 was designed not to be.
It is preference though, and personally I wouldnt take a step backwards, the P1 was a good car back in 2000 (but still not rated as highly as some of the JDM cars of that time), trouble is that its 2007 now, they may look one of the best classics but park it next to a new age and they look old

Your best bet is to test drive both and see for yourself. I think the P1 is a better looking car but you might prefer the ride and build quality in the newer one.
Good luck with whatever you choose

I'm a P1 owner so I'm biased (and it's a toy rather than an every day car, although I used to use it all the time) but I've been horrified that Suburu have compromised every car since IMO. They've gone down the practicality / Euro blandness route design-wise. It bothers me that most fuglies have had lights etc changed to try to make them look better and they're still awful. I'm sure they're fine mechanically / performance-wise but I wouldn't swap my P1 for any of them.
The P1 feels special to own - it's a terrific drive (took it over the Snake Pass the other night and loved it) - have had it since new (including engine re-build) and in reality it's now worth sod all to own or to run so I'm never selling it. Other cars will be additions to the stable rather than replacements - and other than something exotic (e.g. 911 GT3, DBS) I can't get excited. It lets itself down on road noise/ interior technology and comfort but in many respects that's why I love it. It doesn't have lots of sh1te to keep it on the road (e.g. the M3) and it's there to be driven.
Would I choose a P1 as an every day car now? If new, undoubtably, as a 6 yr old car, I'd hesitate. I would not choose a new age no matter what, however - the new imprezas are common, chavvy and uninspiring. There are much nicer motors around to have fun in.
Good luck whatever you go for.
