Default Which STi would you choose??

As some of you may know I am currently looking to buy an STi, now I have been looking along the lines of a Hawkeye STi on an 06 plate without the PPP package.

However, I can also pick up the previous model which I believe was phased out on a late 55 plate, now due to the insurance being lower I am able to get the STi with the PPP.

If you could choose between the models which one would you have and why?

What are the main benefits or disadvantages of either?

Either the 06 hawkeye STi or the previous Sti on a 55 plate with PPP?

Cheers

I'd get the slightly older one: you'll miss out on some of the depreciation, and get a bit more power and a nicer noise. I prefer the look of the '05 model too.

Aye, its something to think about.

I think I prefer the front end of the hawkeye but the rear of the blob.

As for changes that were made excluding the engine, and new look front/rear was anything else changed? Suspension, brakes etc?

Also performance wise, what differences are there between the two if any?

I remember reading that the blobeye STi PPP was quicker to 60 but the hawkeye was quicker when on the move, its in gear times were better I think, so 50-70mph etc?

Forgetting looks interior and exterior which comes down to personal preference, which car has the best overall performance out of a Blobeye Sti PPP or a Hawkeye STi?

Power wise I'm guessing that the hawkeye is around 25 bhp/lbs/ft down on the blobeye...

What do we all think??

St Leger Subaru told me the Blobeye was in demand on the used market whereas they said they struggled to sell Hawkeyes.............

I would go hawkeye, not that there is anything wrong with the blobeye, and you can mod it at a later date if you want. I think its a better looking car and the engine is easier to live with than the 2ltr. I know i would say that but why get an older model when you can afford a new one?

Blobeye PPP would be my choice of the 2 aswell.

If its a MY05 (which being a 55 plate i would assume it is... small arch extensions on the rear will prove it is or not) then the technical differences are almost zero.

I believe the only difference is that the MY06 has an additional DCCD-A sensor which makes no difference at all in the real world, red dials and the obvious 2.5litre lump for emissions reasons. Some also come with Side Airbags (although not all i have noticed) so they also have different seats which arent as nice as the Blob/Hawk seats without in my opinion. (check for Black cushion piece between ur legs to tell difference.. with black there = no side airbags)

Each to their own though... the 2 litre will like to work you and the gearbox more (which i personally prefer on the grounds that i want to feel as involved as possible with every drive)... but the 2.5 will feel a little lazier and happier for you to have to work less.

I had the choice like you... Brand New 06 Plate Blob, or Brand New 06 Plate Hawk... View my scooby for the choice i made.

Either way your going to get a cracking car mate.... give them both a good drive and see which one u prefer. Good luck with your choice.

Aye, I love the front end on Hawkeyes, especially with the Scott Lowe Splitter on, looks smart.

I understand what evil.soup is saying about why buy the blob when you can afford the hawk.

This is a tough decision - maybe I should do a cut and shut and throw the Hawkeye front end onto a blobeye but with the blobeye 2.0l PPP inside.

Marmski - thanks a lot for your post!!

Cheers

First off i prefer the Hawkeye, that's why i bought one.

But,if you prefer the look of the Hawk front but the Blob rear you could always get a Hawk and but the Blob rear light clusters on it - IIRC it's a straight swap and you could probably pick them up on here or fleabay.

I would drive the 2 first though to make your own mind up,you will always get a difference of opinion on here.

I do mainly town driving during the week and don't do many miles, that's why the Hawk suits me best but.....If you do a fair few miles and get the chance to do a few B roads then i understand that the Blob can be a very rewarding drive.

I must admit i wasn't a great lover of the Hawk to start with but it really grew on me so i got 1.Stuck some 18" Pff7's on,lowering springs and a Scott Lowe front splitter and it transforms the car to look at.Both can be modded to the hilt as wel if that's what you like to do.

Seriously, take a drive in both and let us know how you get on.

if you want performance any of the JDM STI's would be my choice. Don't be put of by the 'import insurance' frighteners - they are the same (if not cheaper) to insure than UK specs

Oh ye, and if its 2ltr you want, the JDM comes with a 2ltr not a 2.5, so best of both worlds if its the more involved drive your after!!

Can anyone tell me the standard bhp and torque figures for an 06 Hawkeye STi and a Blobeye STi PPP?

Thanks again

Had virtually the same dillema myself, ended up with an 05 STi PPP and love it
Tested an 06 hawkeye STi and thought it was great but without that trademark burble, it is there a bit under acceleration though. I almost bought the hawk but once I found a black Blob with all the extras I wanted it was an easy decision
You can get 06 plate blobeye's so have a look around

Oh yeah, my car is also Black so goes faster anyway

I think Hawkeye STi is 276bhp and similar torque / 320bhp with PPP
Blobeye STi PPP is 301bhp/299 torque. If I remember both the PPP variants have similar acceleration figures.

Don't forget the Tax Band issue too. Pre and Post March 06 = £200 soon. That's a few tanks of fuel or some new toys.

I wonder why on the insurance sites it gives you the option of the 265/301bhp for the blobeye but only the 276bhp for the hawkeye, no ppp'd option?

Therefore when getting a quote you have to tick the option for a power upgrade of between 11-25% which really bumps up the premium.

It really is a hard one deciding between the two motors as both are stunning cars and both have their pros and cons. I'd say that the Hawk is the better looking of the two cars but it seems that the PPP'd blobeye is more of a drivers car.

As for the burble of the blobeye, how different is the sound of the hawkeye?

Would the addition of say a Blitz Nur Spec R to a hawkeye bring back that burble note?

Thanks for all replies so far!!

G

With regard to tax costs I thought its £205 before March 06 and £300 after March 06?

I weighed up this one when deciding too matey, IIRC the gap increase in years to come with post march 2006 cars getting into the £400+ bracket in the not too distant future.

For the first year or two it shouldn't affect me if I decide to get the hawkeye so I'm not that bothered about it really, plus by the time 3-4 years comes around when I may get stung then I will probably be looking to replace the car by then anyway. Also no doubt my replacement car around that time will also be in the highest tax band anyway so I'm screwed either way

I think the benefits of owning the car outweigh the tax costs as well although there is no doubt that they really do take the p1ss!

Cheers

Don't go paying £23k for that car. Not so long ago guys were picking up nearly new spec d's for £19995 and it's a better car with leather, etc and it's "discreet"

By all means test drive it though

No way would I be paying £23K for it, I've said that I want to spend around £21K, so if the dealer can get anywhere near that then I might start talking.
