Lightbulb Exhaust survey... The perfect scooby exhaust? You tell me...

Hey guys,

What would your perfect scooby exhaust be like?

Im just trying to get an idea here as to what people look for when it comes to an exhaust system for their Subaru and quite importantly the back box design.

Please can you post what you feel is most important to you in a system,

How you think the rear box should look?

How loud it should be?

Tip style: slash cut, outward rolled, inward rolled, angled exit, straight exit, jap style or rally style?

Tip dia: 3", 3.5", 4" or 4.5"?

Do you use your car for street or track?

Frayz, When I had that 5" magnex cat back on my classic it sounds nice, a little too loud, but most importantly, it was too big hanging from the rear bumber. So I wanted a backbox with a smaller tip design, and as I know things about Impreza's and exhaust's I knew that the H&S scoobysport 3.5" rolled tip was the perfict exhaust to hang from my rear bumper...just the right size, right tip design and not ott (in ya face) expecially as it was going on my sport.

But when I get a turbo GC I will probably put something like a Nur Spec R or a HKS hi-power as I love the jap look slash cut angled exit 5" rear box look on jap cars.

But I think there is a limit to size of the rear box that you can put on a impreza. Yeah, a 5" blitz may look a little big on a classic, but put the same exhaust on a newage car and it looks small, but in fact I think you need a slightly bigger backbox on a newage car as they are a bigger, more aggressive looking car, where as a classic is a small saloon, so a samller tip is nessacery say 4.5" tip.

Angled exit makes all the difference on jap cars...its a must if it is a large box. If its a smaller box, like the H&S 3.5" like I have on mine, which suits the classic slightly more than a big exhaust imho. But 5" straight cut (non-angled) back boxes looks horrible no matter if its a classic or a newage car, like I found out on mine with the magnex.

So really what I am trying to say, match the exhaust looks with the looks/theme of the car. So if subtle is the look, then somthing like the H&S scoobysport is fine, or if you like in your face and like to be herd, then a blitz or Vortex is the exhaust to choose. But why would you want an already iconic, drawing attention to itself car on its own and stick a bloody great loud exhaust on it

I am not sure if I have contradicted myself, but I think you can understand where I am comming from...hopefully.

P.S. sorry for the essay.

How you think the rear box should look? angled upwards and to the left. jap style for a jap car. the "box" itself shouldnt be much bigger in diameter than the muffler either, for aesthetic qualities

How loud it should be? ridiculously loud. but not raspy evo loud. a deep throaty burble on idle, that opens the heavens and sets of beemer alarms when under threat

Tip style: slash cut, outward rolled, inward rolled, angled exit, straight exit, jap style or rally style? as above, angled exit, jap cut 4.5" muffler. possibly burnt tip. uber shiny

Tip dia: 3", 3.5", 4" or 4.5"? 4.5" anything bigger is too big. not a fan of oval exits either

Do you use your car for street or track?street. its done circa 130,000 miles admittedly on two engines, i dont think she'd take much track abuse
there you go buddy.

Be aware the Ninja is awesome BUT you get motorway drone badly with it.
Mine started really getting on my nerves until i changed my headers then the noise changes and its superb now, no drone.
So, Ninja, awesome on tickover, awesome on accelleration, and if you have my headers it gets good when you put pedal to the metal. LOL.

Agree completely with chocolate o brian, 4" round exit, angled and upwards, and 'sod the neighbours' loud

Just fitted a Blitz Nur Spec R this week and IMO it is absolutely purrrrrfect

I have a tsl group n and centre pipe, i found it loud to begin with but now if anything i find it could do with being a bit noisier, i reckon that the decat downpipe will hit the perfect note for me

With it being a 4" rolled tail it's a bit ott for a classic 3.5 would have been much better but tsl probably did this so it would suit the newage better as the same box fits both systems

Id say best overall would be 5" slash for newage 3.5 straight exit, big enough to be notices

Id have had the typhoon but i got the impression noise levels would be ott, least with the group n i can build on it

I think one of the main reasons for having an Impreza is the sound so i'd say something approaching the sound of a H&SJapstyle/Afterburner, maybe mixed with a Prodrive, something that gives you a nice deep rumble without being OTT.

4" straight exit seems to look about right on a Newage, IMO 5" looks a bit Boyracer Chav looking to me.

Interesting MaDaSS !

Is is dramatically louder than the Scorpion ? Will it wake the neighbours starting in the early morning ? (Decat apart from sportscat dp).

Where did you get your headers from, how much did they cost (and I take it you had to remap afterwards) ?

Cheers,

Andy

Yes it is dramatically louder than the Scorpion. Yes the neighbours will hear it, it depends what they do about it! I have some snotty people around me BUT not one has ever moaned to me and i work shifts, so we have early mornings and late evenings. One or two that are into cars love the sound, but i am really surprised as there are a lot of elderly near here and even they dont moan! LOL.

The headers were bloody expensive, from Tracktive, GT Spec II replicas ceramic coated. (*cough* waste of money *cough*)
Stick to ported OEM.

Cheers MaDaSS, although thet does put me off a tad. I would only buy one if I'd heard one on a car (never been to a Scooby meet !).

Are you looking at just a box only and keeping the rest of the standard system/cats etc.

is that advised? Also will you still get same noise/power benefits or is the rest of the system going to be where it is all lost?

enquiring minds want to know!

5t.

Ideal would be a 4.5" slash cut angled exit design, the box itself looks much tidier when its tucked up away right under the car and not hanging low.

I want a nice loud burble on idle and a reasonably loud roar when the throttle is opened. Pretty much what I have got on at the moment. However the Blitz NUR is a bit too loud for my liking.

I can't stand the rolled lip exhausts. Anything 4" or less is lost on a newage.

Cannot hang low.

I love the Buddy Cub backbox with the stubby tailpipe and the burnt/titanium tipped ones lOOk nice too.

Everyone knows the noise they want, but with different limitations, ears, we settle for something close.

My custom 3" is too loud as an everday drive, but unless you're doing 80+ it doesn't effect too much, you can always stick the bung in to have almost standard sound level.

Deep rumble, which turns into a roar. Pops & bangs on overrun.

The decatted Ninja roared better, sounded angry!!

2.5" rolled tip racebox up to cat... discreet as far as a performance exhaust goes, great rumble at idle and sounds like a scooby should when giving it some right foot. Perfect for me!

More of a deep rumble than loud IMHO and I haven't found it too bad on M'way either..

Can't be too loud as Pete Lewis has one FFS..!

Definitely agree that anything less than 4" looks totally lost on a newage..!
