For 4-5k go for a 99 spec uk turbo. Cheaper to insure and easier to get those precious ponies out of. Almost all of those out there will already have a stainless system and the cats removed so all thats needed is a green panel filter, walbro fuel pump and a remap which will see 270bhp and similar torque.

Or buy a 95wrx with 260ps (256bhp) already (needs to run on super unleaded to get the best out of it though)
Most imports normally come with full exhaust system (over here a pre July 95 import gets an easier emissions test http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosacorp/repo...01992-2002.pdf.

IMO would be best to buy an fairly unmodified one (suspension, exhaust fine but any weird electronic gizmos i would stay away from)

Most importantly you cannot run these cars if you are on a tight budget imo

Thanks for input. Running it will be fine, its just i need to get the cash for buying a good 1, and then moveon from there.

Other than looking for smoke, checking levels etc.. what other things should I look at for, as around my budget, the car will be on quite high mileage?!

Thanks

normally japanese imports are of a low mileage even at that age my 93 wrx came over 4 years ago with about 56000km.
If you know someone already with an impreza may be worth taking them along when you go to have a look at 1.

Get yourself a nice STI RA, £4k - £5k will get you one.

Or if you stick with a WRX then get a 95> (as said above) as you'll get nicer seats, 260ps etc.

What other common faults, signs of msitratment do I look for

And any good import places ( in southwest uk) - I am from Bath.

Will 4k get a good example?
