Default Is it safe to buy a car without a BIMTA cert?

I am looking at a JDM import (S2000) tomorrow and its only been in the country a month, but doesn't have a BIMA cert with it. I can get one done but it takes 10 days according to the website.

The BIMTA checks its not nicked from Japan etc...

I will do an HPI to check the finance aspect etc.

Anyway, back on track, the problem i find with Bimta certs is, i phoned up and gave details and they said it would be 2 weeks before ALL the results came back, now thats all well and good, but when 2 or 3 want the car and your waiting for that cert,it gets sold !!!

if it doesnt have one already, its not the b all and end all,it helps, but most dont have them.

if it was nicked in japan,t wont be going back there anyways !

A BIMTA certificate is virtually valueless, your car wasnt stolen in Japan. Seeing the original auction appraisal sheet would be of far more worth.

We get a lot of our customers a BIMTA but people think these also warrant the miles.....they do but only at the last point of sale be it a dealer or auction house. Very few nicked cars come in these days so i wouldn't wory too much, it may be easier to buy from someone like Stuart as at least you'd know you were buying from someone you can go back to if you had any issues

Turns out the car in question has no V5 Log book

The guy just slipped it in there when I rang to confirm to see it. Tried to brush over it as a non issue.

"its not a problem, I can send it to you when I get it"

Yeah right!

Its got UK plates on it and been in the UK since the start of June.

I rang the DVLA and they said they dont recognise the plate.

Sounded a bit suspect.

Both the DVLA and the police say its a no no to buy with no V5.

No V5 in some circumstances are fine, my mate just bought a £300 ford van that was driven with no insurance, he got it from a breakers, no v5,applied and got one for it.

so it depends why he says it doesnt have one, if it was eaten by the dog, left in a pocket thru the washing machine then yeah, dodgy, but if he says like, the log book was dropped in the sink with full water while washing up etc maybe its ture.

find out why no v5 and question his answer

Most of my fresh imports sell before the V5 arrives but he should have the paperwork from the DVLA such as a number plate cert, a stamped de-reg copy and a receipt for the first tax & reg for around £149. The first V%'s usually arrive within 10 days so the beggining of June looks a little suspect

That may be fine for a van @ £300 but Mark was looking to spend around £12,000

PS Mark you've done the right thing
