Should really have been an STi rather than a WRX, bit unfair to use the top spec model from Ford and Honda against the 'family' model from Subaru - unless the STi version hadnt been released then.
So Ford are better really. Quicker, better build quality, better depreciation, better equipment spec.
They tried to get a classic round, but unfortunately the MAF failed, then the coil packs caused a misfire, then a piston melted.

IIRC the cooking model WRX was more in the same price bracket (especially if it was a EU import ). So maybe that was a deciding factor.
I'll never forgive Subaru for plonking WRX badges on bog standard EU Turbos, whilst the JDM WRX classics of earlier years were blessed with extra power.

I dont know why most Subaru owners cannot accept how good the Ford RS is? I mean, i love my Subaru to bits and yes i hate Fords but you cannot knock the RS. they are sound motors i think.
Certainly got some poke anyways.
Mind you, the BMW 1 series, now thats another rant! LOL.

Looking back on that old episode of TG, doesn't it make it evident that they've lost their way a little with the show now ? Look at the format, new car, tested against its rivals on track, road-tested and suitable conclusions drawn. I'm all for the fun they have now on TG, but a little less of it and a bit more proper car stuff like that would be great. If they were to do that same test now it would involve an Apache gunship and a trip to the Antartic instead of the Scoob and Honda !

I am sick and tired of watching reviews about 90k cars. We all love to see top range cars, but ffs we cant bloody afford em.
Its about time it came back down to earth a bit and gave us a bit more 'normal' car shows.

Show me any NEW cars worth reviewing. Nothing is out there. At least nothing I seen in teh magazines thats anything worthy of dedicating a slot on TV for, so IMO = nothing worth sticking on TG.
Jap's eye Imprezas are the same as the blob eye, and exactly how many vesions of the EVO III/IV/V/VI/VII/VIII/IIIX/IIX/IX/X/FQ320/FQ340/FW400 etc do you want tested? Surely not every single one?
Barring the multitude of special editions and facelifts which essentially are the same cars that have already been tested. No real fresh clean-sheet design cars out there in the budget high-power family car sector.
Oh well, at least we can look forward to the review of the all-new Impreza hatchback some time in the future

If TG returns in the autumn they need to be pressuring Subaru and Mitsi to be the first to test both new cars. Litcho is already advertising 08's for sale so they're not too far from being available, and X's are due by Sept. The 1st show could be completely dedicated to affordable performance cars, with the Civic TypeR, Leon, ST and maybe even the Brera (4x4 turbo) lined up alongside the newcomers. Another relevant feature could be the rise of the performance diesel. They've touched on this before pitting the Fabia vRS against a Mini Cooper with the oil-burner winning, but with these type of motors hitting 170bhp and 300ftlb out of the showroom, and much more with minimal tuning, alongside the economy benefits they really should report on where the more sensible car nut is heading these days. They could look at covering amateur motorsport such as TOTB or drifting to get closer to their target audience, instead of just satisfying our childhood desires of supercars every week. Tuning is big business, but whenever they even think about what ordinary people do to their cars they resort to the humiliation of badly chav'd grott when there are many superb companies out there doing fantastic work an every marque.
Don't get me wrong, I love the fun stuff, but want a bit more of what the show was originally about too. I ain't no TV researcher or producer, but if I can come up with enough to fill a show in a 10 minute rambling post on here, I'm sure they can make a series worth watching. If they're not careful they'll become victims of their own stupidity. Driven tried being fun and turned to Drivel. 5th Gear are trying hard to climb back up that slippery slope, and will keep struggling whilst they retain the services of VBH and that boring geeky student. TG's presenter line-up is perfect, but the content is getting tenuous. Let's hope the next series will improve as we all know the last one was badly affected by Hamsters accident.

Apart from ....
Andy F's motor can hardly be counted as a classic impreza can it - the bodyshell is a classic shape yes, the engine and running gear is far from standard. I'd be surprised if it even uses a MAF.
And the fact that the WRC cars can hardly be called classics either, yes the body shape is the same (as it has to be for homologation) but thats pretty much where the similarity ends. Even then they won mainly thanks to the fancy electronics developed by Prodrive which were streets ahead of the competition for a couple of years.
And the fact that after the 22B, the STi RA Spec-C (newage) will knock the **** off pretty much any other impreza in standard factory form, possibly not straight line, but imprezas were never designed as a straight line car.
Now get ur coat

Didn't the Bugeye claim the manufactures championship too?

ill have to change the limited edition plaque on the inside and outside of my type R STI WRC, as it says (1997 world championship winner subaru)
check your facts mate, this was way before the bug eye was even born...no YOU get your coat.
im going to love this, wheres PS L when you need him

and if your not counting the classic impreza of andy f as a classic...
then how on earth can you count the WRC (you got me) bug eye of R.B as a bug eye??
at least andy is a privateer, the WRC car was changed beyond the relms of any normal/road going subaru
so if you discount andy, you must discount WRC cars,
but yes you got me with richard...i should have known better, but every other one was in classics (and thats what made subaru as a rally marque)
ps i have a 2002 bug eye sti also, with over 40k spent on it, and i still prefer the type R (standard trim almost)

I should add... What in gods name we're subaru thinking when they made the Bug eye WRX.. I drove a couple a year or so back because i fancied a "newer" scoob.. and I was most dissapointed !

Okay - when you actually decide to read my frigging post.
You said "Didn't Subaru win ALL their titles in Classics?"
I pointed out that NO, Subaru did not win "ALL" their titles in Classics. Richard Burns, the only Englishman ever to win the WRC, did so in the 2001 Season, driving a Bugeye.
At no point did I say Subaru had only won in a bugeye, I shall leave the grossly incorrect statements to you; and anyhow - you brought up the WRC reference.
I'm trying very hard to remain polite...
Oh, and just to make sure..
Years Subaru have won the WRC drivers championship -
1995 - McRae
2001 - Burns
2003 - Solberg (hard to believe for those with shorter memories I know )
(Subaru won the constructors championships in 1997, but lost the actual drivers title to Makinen driving a Mitsubishi - hence the plaque in your car).

i was trying to be lighthearted, and if you read the second of my posts your refering to, i admitted id got it wrong with R.B,
the WRC referenc was just to compare with the modified car of A.F.
but it matters not, im not that ****.
and as a point of meadiation....your bug eye is a lot nicer/faster & more reliable than my Type R.
good luck.

why? there great cars, i have a 02 model, and its the nuts, if you send me a pm with your email address ill send you the photo file, i spent 40k on my engine, and chassis, and love it.
i just like the drive of the Type R better.
but i respect you for defending the bug, because a lot do slate it, why i dont know.
good luck mate.

lay off the bug eyed, if it wasn't for this model we probably wouldn't have the blob eyed or hawk eyed.

I still prefer the look of my bugeye to any classic.
*cackles and runs for cover*.
Seriously though, I do.#
Just watched the top gear... Beaten by a Civic Type R around a track? Jesus.. does PPP really make THAT much difference then? My bug has PPP and I wouldn't even look twice at a Type R! I didn't realise standard WRX's were that slow.
