Try finding any 2L turbo 4x4 capable of or similar to a STi in performance terms and you will find no difference in fuel consumption. Apart from the front wheel drive brigade. If you are concerned about fuel already then its not the car for you. Buy a diesel

Version 8 Sti and i get between 16 & 18 on normal town roads. Stop/start.
If your worried about the fuel, get a smaller car as they are the alkies of the fuel world.

As above, find another 4x4 with the same performance and check mpg.
Depending on mods you could get a remap, made mine quicker, and better mpg, usually about 25mpg, and i don't hang about, on a recent trip to the ring, i was getting 300miles to a tank cruising there

Used to get the yellow fuel warning light come on at 210-220 miles, and always filled up within 30-40 miles (50-52 litres), giving around 21 mpg.
Since full decat and remap I get an extra 20-25 miles to the tank . An extra 1mpg despite fully enjoying the extra 50bhp it's now got.
All I need to do now is drive the car for 500,000 miles and the mod will have paid for itself

My 05 sti ppp consistantly gets 20mpg on mixed driving, bit of overtaking, bit of cruising, bit of town and the odd blast. Best ever was 23mpg on a long cruise. Car is just now hitting 11,000 miles and have heard that they don't really loosen off properly until around this milage.
301bhp = mega fun & mini mpg! As long as you're not fussed (tight budget) don't worry about it, just drive and enjoy. I use BP Ultimate by the way.

Driving style is even more critical with a turbo engine than an NA, way back my Dad had two Sierra Cossies (RWD and 4x4) and two Rover 620tis, all four averaged about 23mpg which seems about what most on here get, road town is worse, on a run better. Sti RA's with the mental gearing can be worse (short gearing) or better (owners ears can't stand over 75mph!) than the rest.
The EJ20's overlarge bore to stroke ratio doesn't help thermodynamic efficiency as the cylinders cooled surface is larger than a squarer or under square engine, also the pre-slipper piston engines had a bit too much parasitic drag, 4WD doesn't help but it's only another small part of the equation!
