Go on moneysupermarket.com and put in the cover you require as prices vary greatly. It is worth deciding whether you want the car covered (if your other half drives it) or yourself (if you drive other cars). I pay under £100 for full cover for 2 cars.

AA and RAC cost more as they have their own patrols instead of just calling out a local garage, so claim to be able to fix more on the spot than others.

The cheapest way is to get cover where you pay the repairer then claim it back, but is seems like too much hard work for me.

Try Auto Aid - it is about £30 for 'recovery to any destination' cover. It is the cheapest way to get cover. Downside is you have to pay for any work done, then claim it back. Reviews are good. I took this out for the Mrs' car.

I'm with the AA. I've also taken out the £500 payout warranty they offer for cars under 100k and 10 years.

Used them once when I 'broke down' on the m25 in a golf tdi. I ran out of diesel, the bloody warning light never came on and I though I could make it to a garage before conking out
