Its right on the border-line of the change over in 96/97, so probably best to check it for sure.
T plate will be 3 plug.
Also, the Z4 is not a UK Ecu as its from an import WRX.

As noted, Sept 96 was the changeover so you haven't really provided enough information as to whether the car has the 3 plug or 4 plug ECU.
The best way to check is to pop off the passenger footwell, but there are a couple of other ways:
Chassis code - GC8A, GC8B and GC8C are 4 plug ecus; GC8D, GC8E are 3 yellow plugs, and GC8F and GC8G are 3 grey plugs.
Facelift - the 4 plug models were pre-facelift, the 3 plug models post facelift. But! Beware - some pre-facelift cars may have had post-facelift cosmetic surgery, so this is not a guaranteed test! (Unlikely to go the other way though)
