This may be silly but why don't you just have a look under the passenger footwell:wonder: . and have a look at the connectors (as them come in specific size blocks).

It would be a good idea to check, but IIRC MY97 with the TD04 is the 3plug ecu the z4 ecu from MY96 and before is 4plug.

Its right on the border-line of the change over in 96/97, so probably best to check it for sure.

T plate will be 3 plug.

Also, the Z4 is not a UK Ecu as its from an import WRX.

As noted, Sept 96 was the changeover so you haven't really provided enough information as to whether the car has the 3 plug or 4 plug ECU.

The best way to check is to pop off the passenger footwell, but there are a couple of other ways:

Chassis code - GC8A, GC8B and GC8C are 4 plug ecus; GC8D, GC8E are 3 yellow plugs, and GC8F and GC8G are 3 grey plugs.

Facelift - the 4 plug models were pre-facelift, the 3 plug models post facelift. But! Beware - some pre-facelift cars may have had post-facelift cosmetic surgery, so this is not a guaranteed test! (Unlikely to go the other way though)
