I think that MUD ran on DEC-10's back in the very early 80's - around the same time that Rogue and Hack came out on UNIX.

Boomer has got it..
I was a 'wizard' (game superuser) on the first ever Mud at Essex university.. it only took eight months and about £1600 in phone charges Seriously addictive stuff!. Us 'externals' were seriously jealous of those on campus who had 9600baud terminals, compared to our pathetic 1200/75 modems .
This was in 1981/2ish, and so predates the Internet by at least 10 years.... god, I feel old .
Cheers,
Alex

Err, no. Predates the WWW by about 10 years, yes. The Internet has been around since the 1960s (e.g. Google recently published the Usenet archives from 1980 onwards).

Ah, those were the days!
A DEC-10 with 256MW (one Word=36 bits) could quite happily support 50-odd users (or even 50 odd users!).
How many peeps know the true meaning of PLUGH and XYZZY???

carl,
the "Internet" can be said to have started in 1969 as ARPAnet (four nodes WORLDWIDE!) but TCP didn't appear until 1974, and TCP/IP didn't become a standard until 1983!!!
The kids of today just don't believe yah!

How much time and money have muds cost to international economy. (For those who haven't figured it out, the where the first on-line games - text based adventures. In the late 80's the moved on to display a picture of the room with the text. If you can imagine playing halflife on line with no graphics - you move around for 4 hours and then a message appears (A woman in blue has killed you) - game over

oh here is kinda the answer:
A MUD (Multiple User Dimension, Multiple User Dungeon, or Multiple User Dialogue) is a computer program which users can log into and explore. Each user takes control of a computerized persona/avatar/incarnation/character. You can walk around, chat with other characters, explore dangerous monster-infested areas, solve puzzles, and even create your very own rooms, descriptions and items.
