Default How long does the average clutch last?

Im thinking of buying an impreza which has done 62,000miles and hasnt had the clutch changed yet.

Just wondering how long do they usually last?

AS with anything, if it's been thrashed, not a long life.

The only thing I can suggest is, if it's an enthusiast who has Modded & has FSH, ask them.

A genuine enthusiast will be "in the main" be open & honest.

If not that profile, an AA or RAC check would be wort the dosh.

Good Luck any way.

Kind regards

My car has 77,500miles on the original clutch.

The Front Brakes lasted something like 65,000miles - the rears have never been touched.

Drive them properly and they last forever .... can you talk to the last owner? Find out if they know how to drive or are a 'wet-behind-the-ears' 20 something who cannot drive yet.

TBH he has a point. Unmodified Imprezas seem to be the way to go. But most people convert them back when selling as you seem to lose a lot of money if you modify. When I bought mine I bought it totally standard, as it was owned by a 50 something Doctor before me and I don't thrash it about either. Clutch will last aslong as you don't tan it everywhere mate!

Ive had mine since 13.5k from one careful owner, its done just over 90k and its still going strong 7 years old too

mind you Ive been saying its on its way out since 25k miles, guess I don't really know what clutch slip is

seriously though mine has never been thrashed, been on track at Trax a couple of times, but took it easy, and its lasted well

really ?...it all depends on the type of mods as the mods like AP, motec, whiteline will always increase the value of the car imho

Only 2 Mods are ok - a backbox alone - and ppp fitted by a main Subaru dealer.

Other than that mods are poison to re-sale values.

Partly true I'm afraid.

A car which hasn't been thrashed can burn out a clutch very prematurely if the driver uses the clutch instead of the handbrake when stationary on hills. That is the no.1 clutch killing antic by the average motorist.

White van man can get away with it; Scooby drivers can't.

As for life span; dependant on the above, between 40,000 mile and 100,000+ miles; The previous being a car driven in the city (not thrashed) with someone who doesn't know where the handbrake is, and the latter is someone who can use a clutch properly and does more motorway driving.

Depends on the person I guess.

Personally when I went for mine I purposely went for one that had not been touched - I would not buy a modded impreza, unless, as you say, it was just a back box and maybe a PPP.

Hpwever, if you knew the car, and the person that did the mods, then it would be fine I guess.

But would I touch a Scoob that had a DV/Induction kit/decat without supporting mods? Not a chance.

When I come to sell mine I am going to post it as being rarer than a 22b - Completely unmolested and in original factory trim

Nothing wrong with a subaru thats got mods , the main thing is who did them and how well, and if you get 70,000 miles on a clutch you need shooting cause you shouldn't have the car , go buy a metro , driving round like a ponce

Mine's done 74000, been driven reasonably hard, had several fast track days, and the clutch is often used instead of the handbrake. It won't last forever, but I'm surprised it's lasted this long.

Surely your brakes can't last 65,000 miles if you're able to beat every 20-something on the road who tries it and still get back to the "home" in time for corrie.

I take it what you mean is, "Drive it like a Chav"? Being so clearly one yourself!

Nah, I can drive properly - not Chaverly

75,000 miles and still going strong. Firstly run it in properly, then use the clutch as a switch, i.e. its either on or off, no slipping. Helps if you live in a flat area of the country.

My Scoob has just done 100k, bought it with around 30k on it and as far as I know the clutch hadn't been changed. So should be okay for at least 100k if driven with mechanical sympathy.

Changed the original clutch on my 93 WRX last October at 160,000 miles!

I've done over 100,000 miles in this car, and the clutch only needed changing because the release bearing was making a horrible noise!
The car does get driven like it should from time to time - enough to need new tyres and brake pads annually.....

My MY99 has just passed 98k on its original clutch - still feels as strong as ever. I guess I'm obviously not trying hard enough.
