TCELL,
I an pretty sure you have only got a 50 Litre tank, think they changed to 60L, on the later models, but can't remember when.
Do a search on fuel tanks etc , I'm sure I've read this on here before.
Failing that, what does your owners manual say?
Cheers MTR

Milky,
I have a MY96 Series McRae, handbook says 60 litre tank on Turbo, 50 litres on other models. SIDC FAQ thinks pre96 cars all had 50 litre tanks, if yours was a very early 96 it may have a 50 litre tank

Oh, another thing as well that isn't really constructive (sorry):
Pete Croney put a post up recently about having to replace a fuel filter as a result of the fuel crisis. Whether the owner had run it low and therefore dragged all the crap at the bottom of the tank through the filter, or whether the crap came from the bottom of the petrol station's tank is unknown.
Running low/out may not be a great move?
Hope this is somewhat useful.

I wondered about this for a while with my MY96 UK saloon. All the docs. said 60 litres (non-turbos are 50 I believe) but whenever the fuel guage read *absolutely bog all petrol left minus 3 gallons* I could only squeeze about 50/51 litres in.
So I ran it out a couple of times (I had a spare can in the boot!). I reckon the capacity on mine is between 58 and 59 litres so slightly smaller than the nominal. The fuel guage is definitely reading much too low near the bottom though. I usually go by the odometer these days.
Dave
PS: when running out you get about 8 miles where the car misfires before giving up completely..... :-)

I wouldn't recommend driving around with any petrol in a spare can for any time: after seeing the extra mess that can result, leave the can empty and circle a petrol station until you run out
