Hello

I cant get scoobychat to work. I get to the login page, enter my username and password (which I assume is the same as those needed to post here), then the next screen just shows an advertisement banner and "connect" in the top left of the page (which I cannot click on). What am I doing wrong? Am I missing something?

Thanks

Are you supposed to be able to click "connect"?

the first screen auto-starts a Java aplet.

This can take some time to load, be patient.

Do you use an old version of IE that doesnt support Java?

IE5 works fine.

I am computer illiterate. What is a "Java applet" and how long should I leave it to load? Also what is "IE"? Are you supposed to be able to click "connect"?

Thankyou

The java applet is the chat window (I think?) so called 'cause its written in the java programing language.

It can take a while especially if you have a slow connection. I <I>think</I> the manufacturers recommend 56k as a minimum.

IE stands for Microsoft Internet Explorer (Exploder?). You don't need to press the connect button as when you log in the system automatically does it.

Hope this helps

Question

Thanks

I have left the screen up for approx 5mins, and a message just came up saying something like "digichat could not connect to server" and something else about "firewalls" and "proxy (more like poxy) servers" preventing access. Please could you translate this into English so my computer illiterate brain can understand

Thanks

Cool

You normal have problems with firewalls and proxy servers if you are accessing the net via a company network. eg a company may have a web server with a modem attached (a proxy server). To connect to the net you wouldnt have a modem but connect via a local area network to this proxy server. A firewall is something which is put on the proxy server to stop you visiting certain websites and protects the network from the outside world. If you are connecting via a proxy server then the proxy servers firewall may be set up not to allow you access. If this is the case you will have to connect via a home account or ask your technical department very nicely about it

If you are connecting via a modem directly from home to an ISP then you should be okay.

PS. I am not a network specialist (as any who is will know from reading the above )

If ChrisB, who knows his way around a network, is around he may be able to give you a better explanation.

cheers

Cool

ChrisP - this Chris L, not ChrisB (just to confuse everyone ), but you explanation is about right. Ernie if you are connecting from work, then you will probably be blocked. Part of the reason for this is security and part of it is companies trying to stop their employees spending hours surfing the web .

If you're still having problems - come back and post again and we'll see if we can help.
