Putting the Hyabusa to bed
#1
Of course you can go to bed with your Busa.
But it's so big you have to roll over twice to roll off.
And will you respect it in the morning??

With winter drawing ever closer, it's thumbs up for 4 wheel drive, sadly though the time has come to put my bike to bed. Do I take it to the bedroom or will the wife object?!!?!?! Have any of you guys got any suggestions for looking after the mistress, the Scooby being the wife!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers,
Scott

My gixer is wrapped up in the garage inside various blankets etc.
Its also plugged into one of those Optimate things.
1/2 can of WD40 also went missing around the time the bike went to sleep for winter.
BTW: Hopefully going to Spain again next year, pls post for details if you fancy blasting around a race track for 2 days in the warm spanish sunshine.

Mine's just kept in the garage with a cover and various blankets over it. It has this done every year (it's a '97) and as long I start it and let it run every 3-4 weeks it's fine (fingers crossed!).
Oh yeah, remember to disconnect the battery.

Seems like a waste of 4-6 months insurance. I tried riding the R6 last year but nearly got hypothermia. Bikes + British Winter do not go. Scoobs are perfect for the Winter here. Well almost, they are a bit flighty on snow because of the rear bias and fat tyres. Need some of those gravel tyres.
As for bike storage I just put mine in the shed. It was OK and I managed to sell it this Summer for a good price.
Mike Burton,
Which Spanish racetrack were you thinking of? Now is the time to be in Spain.

What's wrong with you lot?
Riding in Winter can be great fun. The rule my friends and I use is, as longs as it's not actually raining when we go out and as long as it doesn't look like it's going to absolutely **** down then we're off out there.
One of my favorite times to ride is on really cold, sunny winter mornings when the bike is producing loads of power (well a bit more loads that usual )
You just need to a) get some decent kit and you'll never get cold b) ride smoothly and the wet doesn't limit your speed much at all
I couldn't last the whole winter without my bike but since having the Scoob, the winters seems to pass a lot quicker 'cos you almost look forward to taking that out when it is pissing down

Winter is the time to wake the Crossers! Still get to ride bikes without having to worry about the wet leaves, ice, mud etc etc Having stuffed one a few years back on a corner on black ice the winter makes me nervous. Good work to those who ride through though!

mutant_matt: You really must be a mutant if you NEVER get cold in Winter Even with several layers the cold gets to you in the end ;( I'm not talking about a 5 minute ride either. Try 4 hours. Never again. Bikes are for Summer or Southern Europe.
Mike B: I have heard other excellent reports about MHL motorsport. Apparently they now do bike hire too.

Ah that's where I've been going wrong.
Well good luck to you Winter bikers. I really tried last year (and I'm no fair weather biker) but in the end I longed for the warmth of a car.
By the way is it me or does the new Blade look way better than the R1 (they're trying too hard).

Z75,
I'm not talking about 5 mins either. We go out for a whole day's riding at least once a month (more like 3 times a week in the summer ), every month throughout the year and with the right kit, you just don't get cold!!!! Even riding all day!!!! Also, we ride almost exclusively on B-roads with a few A-roads thrown in and I find the constant moving around on the bike (and clinging on for dear life under acceleration ) keeps you pretty warm

*LOL*!!!!
But as Chiark will confirm, I'm but a mere soft southern desk working wuss who doesn't like the cold and needs to wrap up really well to keep the cold at bay
Seriously, I'm crap when it comes to feeling the cold which is why I've invested in some great kit which really does keep me warm on the bike all day!!!!!

Have you bought some of those heated body warmers/gloves etc? I was going to make the investment for the bike and for flying (Microlights, now that is damn cold).

Seamus, 'fraid not, just "normal" stuff.
i.e.
(inside to out... )
Shoei long sleeve cotton/lycra mix roll neck top
Large and thin t-shirt
Thin long sleeve jumper
Hein Gericke All Weather Jacket (a good one with LOADS of features)
Shoei cotton/lycra mix tube
Winter Hein Gericke All Weather Gloves (not those nasty mitten things) which keep my hands warm forever
Thin Long Johns (I don't care if it's sad, they work)
Crowtree Leathers (trousers only in winter)
Thin Long socks over normal socks, over bottom of leathers but inside boots
I'm not sure how much of that lot you could wear on a Microlight but some of it would certainly help. The Shoei tops and tubes make a huge difference and often wear them when standing around on cold (SIDC) track days....

I know I have joined this a bit late...
I have just put my Blade to bed... well I might take it out again this weekend, but I am no longer using it to commute..
which is currently between Maidstone in Kent and Derby weekly.
When you start getting frost on your jacket it is time to think about the car.. tyres were not warming up, making it a bit hairy... a couple of unintentional doughnuts out of junctions later.. Also find it difficult to predict the weather in Derby for a week on a Monday morning at 4:30am in Kent... :-)
I think the Blade is glad of the rest... it is an August 1998 with 60,000miles on the clock now :-)
So the Scooby is back in service daily rather than at weekends....
This is highlighing the need for 17inch wheels!!!!
I just hope my journey home this afternoon is spent sat in traffic wishing I was on the bike.
