Question

Hi There,

This weeks Autocar quote the new STi type UK as weighing a hefty 1470kg with a power/weight ratio of just 178bhp/tonne, whereas EVO magazine quote the Japanense STi as 1430kg.

I find it hard to belive that European type approval has added over 40kg of weight ?

Anyone here know what the true weight is, as it appears the power/weight ratio is no better than a standard MY00 although the performance figures quoted suggest otherwise.

does anyone smell anything?

Ahh my poor old shape, only an anorexic 1230kg. Must fatten her up to be in line with the precious newer better version.

http://www.subaru.co.uk/sti/specs.htm website originally said 1370 now it says 1470! I know because we discussed this in a thread a few weeks back. Wonder which is the correct figure? Certainly is a bit more than the old UK spec 1235kg even if it does have 50bhp more (on SUL vs UL) so similar PWR on SUL??

Question

I thought the 01's were 1380kg. I have found a couple of flaws in the autocar article

330 brembo's, try 305 brembo's
wheels up to 17's from 17's tyre size up maybe

Seems odd that the STi would weight 90kg more than the WRX? The odd diff, bigger brake disc and suede can't be that much can it? 225 vs 215 tyres from the looks of it.

the standard sti weighs 1430kg so you would expect the UK sti to wiegh a bit more due to the different diffs, and probably the big fat cat that it will be fitted with to make it pass the emissions.

but another 40kg is a bit excessive i think

Apparently they added more safety features to the front of the chassis, reengineered it in some way and thats what is giving the majority of the extra weight.

Does this mean that i don't have to sell my overpriced, under equipped UK300 now

288bhp 266lb torque and around 208bhp/ton Eat my dust STI. I just have to get the real WRC carbon fibre spoiler now,a snip at £1400

mind you i would still love one,

Scott

Er, a decent set of scales would be of more use for this than a car!

I'm sure the up in weight is for the extra front lsd ,330 front brakes and 305 rear brakes and the six speed gear box.

Ah, but what's the power/weight with a driver on board? Say 75kg, weight of a MY00 goes up to 1305kg, STI VII is 1545kg.

PWR is therefore 164.75 bhp/tonne for MY00 and 168.9 bhp/tonne for STI VII. Goes more in the STI VII's favour if you regularly have more passengers - so drive round with all your mates in the back

Have been looking at the new shape scoobs (to replace my MY97).

UK300 are really coming down in price now, can be had for £23K. But for extra £3K i could have the UK STi with 6-speed, 265(subaru conservative BHP ++ ), 330mm Brembos, and 305mm rear brakes (bigger than front of a UK300), uprated engine, tracker and Thatch 1 alarm.

After speaking to a few tuning companys with a full decat, induction kit etc i could be looking at around 320HP, which with the close gearbox, should give more than a few smiles for only £3K more.

My head's hurting now, need to go have a look at sopme figures.

Any comments from you guys.

Cheers

Iain,
GET THE STI.
I've got a mate with a UK300 PPP + EXTRAS and it's an awesome car 290 BHP, but as you say for 3K more you could get an STI with lots sorry I mean loads of bigger and better bits on it and with a few mods get over the 300 BHP barrier if thats what you want.

By the way I hope to get mine next month can't wait.Where in the world are you, we could arrange a meet.
