Was the wagon full of people/items? My WRX sounds great when i've a car full of people, when I haven't you can hardly hear it.

just the driver and a passenger, usually they sound good when they have upgraded exhausts which are quite large but this looked standard and was quite small but it just had a very nice burble to it and when it drove off it was even better

To get the "burble" you have to get a total decat or at least a 100 cell catted down pipe.
The total will be louder (slightly) than the 100cell race cat.

The Spec D is the stelth Impreza, isnt it? It might be an STi, but from what I heard it's been designed to be quiet & unassuming......

Unless you start to modify it, you can't expect it to be the same as a full blown STi. But, if you do start to modify, why get a Spec D in the first place???

If the other car was a MY05 or older then it will be louder than yours even if it was standard. The MY06 is much quieter than previous models. If you replace the resonated centre section on yours for a de-resonated straight pipe then the subaru sound will return. If you replace the backbox as well for an aftermarket one then it will be even louder.

The spec D is the 'discrete' model, quiet and unassuming with silver wheels and low level spoiler. You will have to remove the resonator and fit a back box such as the prodrive or standard STi one to get more of a sound out of it. Either of these back boxes should be fine with the warranty as they are OEM boxes, but check with the dealer before doing anything
