The type R is named after its shell (retna) and is a 2 door car, the type RA (race altered) has a stack of other goodies like engine oil cooler and is lightweight (glass, no sound proofing etc).
Simplest terms

I think the Type RA is a light weight 4 door & the Type R is the 2 door.
Deffo go for the 2 door

The Type R has DCCD (Driver Controld Center Diff) Which means you can shift the power to the rear wheels, close ratio gearbox & an intercooler water spray. The type R is 280bhp. You really need to test drive each model before making a choice.

Alternatively read..

The STi type RA also has DCCD, as for performance, not much in it but the RA is theoretically quicker due to shorter ratio's and is probably the one you should go for

The RA is a bit lighter, and they all had a front lsd as apposed to some of the type r's having a open front diff. Only type r, V-LTD had a roof vent.
Go for the RA as its not as gay as the R

Another 'RA' myth Im afraid. Virtually all Type-RAs have an open front differential. Off the top of my head there were only a couple of models whose transmission included a front LSD.
