Cleaning the engine
No real tips, just that the electrics on the new age are a little more "sensitive" in certain area's like the alternator for instance, no matter how well you cover it up, water gets in there and 600+ for a new one so you can take the chance with it (not worth it to clean your engine) or leave your engine as it is
(this is from experience btw)

so the fact that i have cleaned mine twice in the last year & all is OK means you are giving false facts.

make sure all the electrics are covered, I used tin foil as you can mould this to the items to protect them.

LOL! well ill tell you this, it took 6 months after cleaning, a few intermittant faults then pop, alternator dies, if you want facts well im giving them to you, get it wet and your paying over 600 quid for a new one.

Default steam it .

why not use steam clean now thats got to be safe , good enough for 4 x 4 drivers . 600 squid for an alternator whats it made of ferking gold .
saying that my last car a mercedes e320cdi the alternator was a staggering £1000.00 pound from the stealers got one brand new for 350 .
stealers errr !

They are 600+ quid because they have a computer chip inside them, basically these ones stop charging under heavy accelleration, quite complex and not repairable they do give up the ghost if you get them wet, like i said, mine took over 6 months to die, just little faults to start with, like the car wouldnt start after a few days, battery drained quicker (because it wasnt charging), changed battery first, that didnt cure it, eventually the lot died leaving me carless
Im not the only one who has suffered from this problem, there was a B4 GT that also suffered at the same time, both of us had washed our engines, even covered parts up but water makes its way into these parts (probably why you no longer see vents on impreza's) and to point out, my alternator was quite a bit cheaper than the B4's!

AFAIK the standard 350 quid alternator doesnt work on new age cars.

Read what im saying
3 types of alternator for subaru's, 1 is the normal one at 350 quid, one is the computerised one (600+) one is the expensive one (800+)
The 350 quid one wont work on new age AFAIK because its connected to the ecu and these ones dont have that connector.
