Default I have got a heated Windscreen, How does it work?

had a look in the search, and apparently only fords have these things, but my windscreen recently cracked, and now I have a HUGE crack accross it, so my insurance will pay the cost of the windscreen, If I fork out the £60 excess, and Autoglass will fit it. So i told them my car etc. the make and version and it was an import etc.

They turned up to fit the new windscreen, the one they bought with them is not heated! I didnt even know mine was until they pointed it out, it has all the like, lines in the bottom of it etc. Anyone know how I would activate this? or is it automatic etc.?

And anyone know where to source a new heated windscreen for an MY03 jdm sti?

Cheers, Eddie

Hmm.. i didnt think they were heated. I thought Ford held the rights on heated screens... and most car manufacturers wont pay their royalies.

Might be wrong... but in my Focus you can notice the really fine wiggly lines across the whole screen top to bottom if you look carefully. Never notice these on my scoob... but then again i dont own a JDM.

I will go and check in a second as I need to check oil and fil the water up properly, but I know for a fact you can see the lines in the black areas around the windscreen, but I will go and see if you can see them in the glass.

I have a Forester and the very bottom of the screen where the wipers sit is indeed heated to prevent frozen blades ripping.

Most of the Newage have Heated Mirrors and Rear Screen... but i think you will find you dont have a heated front screen.

Its one of the only things i miss at this time of year in the Impreza compared to my Focus.

Yup, not factory,

But demon tweeks sell them. Surprisingly.

Good for rally cars where you swap the weight of the fan for the weigfht of a switch.

A few people have tried a group buy in the past 6 years.

Edited to add, my JDM STI 'GL' spec 03 car does not have a heated front screen.

There are 3 different screens available to the STi, of which none of them are heated, one has a blue tint, one a green tint and one is lightweight glass.

Heated Screens | Windscreens & Windows | Demon Tweeks Motorsport, Motorcycle, Modifying, Parts and Accessories

Demon Tweeks website does not list cars, but the book does.

I put one in on my old '66 Beetle because, as anyone who's ever owned an old Beetle knows, there IS no actual windscreen demisting at all LOL, apart from wiping it with your sleeve every half a minute. Can't see how Ford can have a patent or exclusive rights or whatever to a basic technology that's been around for years.

It will be a retro-fit... like the Demon-Tweeks version.

Jaguar cars have heated front screens because they are owned by Ford. Some Volvo's also have them... and some very prestige car manufacturers will pay Ford to be allowed to use them on single product lines.

Impreza's dont have heated front screens, but will perhaps have a heat pad to prevent the windscreen wipers from sticking at the bottom.

Default Heated front Windscreen

If you read some of the magazine reviews, some of the more developed race cars such as Andy forrest appear to have heated front windscreens. Presumably this is designed to reduce weight by loosing the heater and air con.

Not sure if they are using Subaru parts or after market

The Import versions of the Impreza had the option of a wiper de-icer. This is built in the screen and only heats teh areas around the wipers. There a dedicated button for this with a logo similar to the rear screen demister, but with a wiper on there.

If its a screen that heats the whole screen, it will be an aftermarket one. They are available and need to be wired in, if you have this already fitted the wiring probably will be tapped of the rear screen switch, switched via a relay or there maybe a unmarked non-oe switch hiding somewhere.

I know this is an old thread but I plan to have a heated screen fitted.
do you have it wired to the rear demist button or on its own?
I'd like mine to be with the original rear one but not sure if r
The original switch & relay can take the additional load

edit: FFS old thread!!

It must be in on its own relay(s)...that can be switched however you like:
If it's a proper full heated screen retrofit (not a wiper de-icer as what was a factory option)...wire via its own relay and dedicated supply with at least 30amp fuse. Might need a 40amp or to wire each side on a independant fuse ...check with the screen manufacture on current draw

The one on my Escort took two feeds to each half of the screen each taking a 30amp fuse for each side (I know as one side failed) and a huge 100amp glowplug/timer relay by the battery. If it is a two sided screen; you can just use two 40-50amp relays switched together (easier/cheaper to obtain). Obtain suitable AWG wire for the job...beware many sellers these days are selling heavy duty wire that is just copper coated aluminium or worse steel (included well known motor factors), which corrode internally, so make sure its pure copper.

Relay can be switched either via feed from heated rear screen relay (can't remember where this is, probably behind one of the footwell kick panels or in engine bay fusebox). Or you could put it on its own switch, but you'll have to remember to turn it off, I think the rear demist auto turns off on a timer..choice is yours!

Wow. This just hit my email notification.

as stated above most production cars like my pre Impreza life Mondeo Ghia had a separate switch, but each heating element must have a separate fused feed via a relay.

The Only additional elements that I have seen run from a rear window switch were heated mirrors on my Evo. But they are small and again run be a separate fused relay.
